Testing out of English Composition

Students wishing to test out of an English Composition course into which they have been placed have different options, depending on the course.

  • Those who have been placed in College Writing (English Composition 100) and who wish to test out of this class should arrange to take the appropriate College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam. Students earning a score of 50 or higher on the English Composition with Essay test, or a 60 or higher on the Freshman College Composition with Essay test, will receive credit for English Composition 100. The English Composition with Essay test is open only to those with 15 or fewer college credits, but the Freshman College Composition with Essay test is open to students at any point in their college careers.   • Those who have been placed in either Fundamentals of Writing (English Composition 093) or Expository Writing (English Composition 105) and who wish to test out should contact Brian Sutton, Director of English Composition, at suttonb@uwgb.edu or at 465-2027. You will be asked to produce several papers you have written for classes and to write a one-hour impromptu essay on a topic which will be given to you at the time that you write the essay.

College-bound high school students may also place out of UW-Green Bay English Composition classes through Advanced Placement (AP) tests:

  • Students who earn at least a 3 on the AP English: Language and Composition test receive credit for College Writing (English Composition 100). Those who earn a 4 or a 5 on this test receive credit for Expository Writing (English Composition 105) as well as College Writing.
  • Students who earn a 4 or a 5 on the AP English: Literature and Composition test receive credit for College Writing (English Composition 100) and for Introduction to Literature (English 104).
