More than 50 Gateway Intel servers running the Microsoft Windows 2003 or 2000 operating system on a gigabit Ethernet network backbone provide UW-Green Bay with its computing power. These systems function as e-mail, web, application, file, print, and Peoplesoft Student Information System servers. Windows XP runs on client PC workstations, while OS X v10.4 runs on our Macintosh computers. Each student in campus housing is provided with a high-speed Internet connection for their personal computer.
All faculty, staff, and students at UW-Green Bay are given a technology account and personal space on our servers. The technology account is used to log into campus computers, e-mail, the Student Information System, Desire2Learn course management software, and various library resources. The logon process gives users access to appropriate network resources including personal and shared network drives and printers. Black & white and color output is available through individual or centralized department printers.
Standard software is purchased by CIT and installed on all campus networked computers. This includes Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint), Outlook, Internet Explorer or Safari, anti-virus software, and various Internet plugins and utilities. SAS, SPSS, Maple, Microsoft Access, FrontPage, Publisher, PhotoDraw, Project, Visio, and Visual Basic are also provided on Windows PCs. MacLink-Plus is provided on all Macintoshes. The campus uses McAfee virus protection and iHateSpam anti-spam software.
Students at UW-Green Bay may use General Computer Access labs that are equipped with state-of-the-art Gateway and Macintosh computers, printers, scanners, and video and audio editing equipment. In addition, there are numerous resource and teaching labs that serve specific instructional programs. Student labs provide access to the Internet, email, core software and over 100 special instructional applications. Student consultants are available to assist with questions and problems.
The Peoplesoft Student Information Systems gives students and faculty Web-based access to class rosters, schedules, registration, advising, electronic grading, financial aid, and student records. Peoplesoft Shared Financials is used for administrative accounting and purchasing functions.
Faculty can incorporate computer technology into their instruction using one of the many technology classrooms on campus. These classrooms are equipped with computers, LCD projectors, VCRs, slide projectors, document cameras, and traditional overheads. Other media equipment and portable computers can be checked out through Media Services for use in any classroom.
The campus is currently expanding its wireless infrastructure so that students, faculty, staff, and guests with laptop computers can hop on the network in the Union, Library, and various other designated locations. Wired laptop stations are also provided in some buildings.
