Printing Adobe Acrobat PDF Files

Online documents are frequently distributed in Adobe's portable document format (PDF) so they can be viewed and printed by anyone regardless of the platform being used. However, printing specific sections of a PDF file has proven to be confusing for many people. Here are some tips on printing Adobe Acrobat (PDF) documents.

Tip 1. Choose the correct Print button.

When printing PDF files from inside a browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, make sure you click the Print button on the Adobe Acrobat toolbar. Don't use the Print button on the browser's toolbar , nor the Print command from the File menu.

Select the correct printer

Tip 2. The Print Dialog Box

Click the Print button on the Adobe Acrobat toolbar to bring up the print dialog box. The print dialog box has a "Print Range" section that allows you to print all the pages, just the current page, or a range of pages where you must specify the starting and ending page number. Note: The Cofrin Library inserts a 'copyright restrictions' page at the beginning of most e-reserve items. You may want to skip printing this page.

Select Print Range

Tip 3. Page Numbers May Not Match

The page number of the PDF file may not match the page number of the document. The PDF file pagination starts with page one and counts up. (Normally the Adobe Acrobat pages are shown on the Status bar at the bottom of the screen.) On the other hand, many documents are created within the original application with a Table of Contents or other pages that are denoted in Roman numerals that precede "Page One" of the document. Original document page numbers can usually be found within the document margins..

Tip 4. The Text Select Tool text tool can select text

Within the PDF document, you can select the "Text Select Tool" (the button with a "T") to highlight and copy paragraphs from the document, then paste them into your own document. This allows you to create your own custom Microsoft Word or other document that contains only the information you wish to save and/or print.

Tip 5. Printing Problems with a specific PDF File.

If you have problems printing an individual PDF file, (for example, the printout contains blank pages), try printing the PDF file as an image. *Macintosh Users do not have this option.

To print a PDF file as an image:

Acrobat 5.x:
1. Choose File --> Print
2. Select Print as Image, and then click OK.

use Print to Image for trouble documents

Acrobat 6.x:
1. Choose File, Print, and then click Advanced.
2. Select Print As Image and any other desired printing options.
3. Click OK to close the Advanced Print Setup dialog box, and then click Print.

Note: When you print a PDF file as an image, it may take longer to print.

The latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is always available free of charge at Adobe's Web site. It can be found at http://www.adobe.com in the Products section. Be sure to download the "Adobe Acrobat Reader" and not "Adobe Acrobat". Look for this symbol:
