Managing Favorites in Internet Explorer

As we're browsing the Web, we sometimes find sites that we'd like to keep track of for future reference. The Favorites menu command in Internet Explorer serves to maintain a list of your "favorite" sites for quick and easy access. This week's tip talks about how to organize your favorite sites in folders, delete sites from your Favorites list, and rename site titles for easier reference.

WINDOWS

When you choose Add to Favorites from the Favorites menu in Internet Explorer, the current page is presented to be added to your list. You can edit the page's title and click OK to complete the process. When you wish to return to that page, you simply need to select it from the Favorites list. Internet Explorer also automatically includes some sites of general interest organized in folders under Favorites.

Setting Favorites for Internet Explorer.

If you're an avid Web surfer, your Favorites list can quickly become long and unwieldly. To manage your Favorites list, choose the Organize Favorites command from the Favorites menu. Your list of Favorites will appear in a frame on the right side of the dialog box. Click on a Folder in this list to expand it and view all the links within the folder. You can click on the folder again to close it. If you click on a site, its title and web address or URL (Uniform Resource Locator) will appear on the left.

If you wish to delete a folder or site, simply select it and click the Delete button on the left. You will be asked to confirm your deletion.

To rename a folder or site within the Organize Favorites dialog box, select it and click the Rename button. The item's title will appear in edit mode with a border around it. You can begin typing to replace the entire title, or use your arrow keys to move around and edit as needed. As long as you remain in edit mode, you may cancel your edits and revert to the original title by hitting the ESC key.

To avoid a long and cumbersome list of Favorites, you can organize them in folders and subfolders within the 'Organize Favorites' dialog box. To create a folder, click the Create Folder button and type a descriptive name for your new folder. To move a site link to your new folder, select the link and click Move to Folder. In the 'Browse for Folder' dialog box, select the destination folder (or subfolder) and click OK. (If the folder and the link are both visible in the frame on the right, you can also drag the link to the folder to move it there.) You also have an opportunity to create a Favorite in a specific folder when you first add it by clicking the Create In or New Folder buttons in the 'Add Favorite' dialog box.

To avoid a long and cumbersome list of Favorites, you can organize them into folders and subfolders. To create a folder, choose Organize Favorites, New Folder from the Favorites menu. (Note: You can open this Favorites panel any time by clicking on the Favorites tab appearing along the left side of your browser window.)

The Favorites panel can be left open if you wish to use and manage your Favorites list from there. When you click on a link in the panel, the corresponding page will open in your browser window.
