Connecting to the UW - Green Bay Network with Personal Laptop Computers

Wireless & Wired Laptop Connectivity

WIRELESS ACCESS

You can access the campus network and Internet in select campus areas using IEEE 802.11b and/or 802.11g wireless networking. You are not required to log into the "UW-Green Bay Wireless" network with a campus account, so anyone with a properly configured laptop can connect.

All wireless network traffic is not encrypted. You should take care in what you transmit over the wireless network as this traffic can be easily captured by other wireless network users.

Please be aware that only software that you have installed on your computer will be available to you. You will not have access to specialty applications found on computers in student labs.

Wireless network service is available in the following areas:

  • Cofrin Library: Most open areas on first and third through seventh floors
  • University Union: Most of the building (meeting rooms, Cloud Commons, Phoenix rooms, Club area) and outside areas within 50 feet of the building
  • Instructional Services: General Access Lab, CIT Offices
  • Environmental Sciences: ES-114 Classroom, open areas of second floor
  • Mary Ann Cofrin Hall: Wintergarden area, second floor lounge, and first floor corridor leading to/from Cofrin Library
  • Laboratory Sciences: Cafeteria area, third floor lounge area
  • Rose Hall: RH-220, RH-230, RH-250 classrooms; open area on second floor
  • Student Services: Most of the building

  • Studio Arts: Cafeteria area
  • Wood Hall: Cafeteria area
  • Residence Life: Community Center

Connecting to the Network

In order to connect your laptop to the wireless network, you will need the following:

  • Wireless Ethernet Adapter Card – Your laptop computer needs a 802.11b Wireless Ethernet Adapter Card (also called NIC or Network Interface Card) in order to connect to the network. On some new laptops, this NIC is built in. If your laptop has 802.11g, you will be able to connect with either 802.11b or 802.11g.
  • TCP/IP Protocol – Most computers are configured with the TCP/IP protocol. However, if your laptop is not yet configured with TCP/IP, you must install it. Instructions on installing TCP/IP appear at the end of this document.

Important: You MUST make sure your wireless is enabled and turned on before attempting to use the wireless network.

  • For wireless network access, you will need to select the “UW - Green Bay Wireless” wireless network via your network connections settings page (click on Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network Connections and then select your wireless network interface card). Alternatively, your wireless network software can often be accessed via an icon located in the lower right-hand corner of the taskbar.
  • The UW - Green Bay Wireless network is not a secure network and you will not be required to authenticate (this means anyone in range of the wireless connection with the proper equipment can use it).
  • You will get a warning that your connection is not secure. Click OK to acknowledge the warning message.

WIRED ACCESS

You can now plug your personal laptop into wired network jacks on campus to gain high-speed access to the Internet and access to your personal network drive. Areas with mobile stations include the General Computer Access lab in Instructional Services 1129, the Cofrin Library 4th, 5th ,6th, and 7th floors, and the Winter Garden and lounge area in Mary Ann Cofrin Hall. You should bring your own network cable to these locations, which you may already have acquired for connecting in campus Housing. Cables are available for purchase at the Phoenix Bookstore. The data jacks that are available for personal laptops are labeled in red as follows:

DATA JACK AVAILABLE
FOR STUDENT USE

You should not unplug an existing University owned computer's data cable in any classroom, office, or lab and attach your laptop at that data jack. You should not plug your personal laptop into any network jack that is not specifically labeled as available for student use. If you use your laptop with an improper data jack, your laptop will be blocked from all wired and wireless network access throughout campus without any advance warning or notification. If your laptop is blocked, you will have to contact the CIT helpdesk to request that the block be removed.

Please be aware that only software that you have installed on your computer will be available to you. You will not have access to specialty applications found on computers in student labs.

Connecting to the Network

In order to connect your laptop to the wired network, you will need the following:

  • Ethernet Adapter Card – Your laptop computer needs an Ethernet Adapter Card (also called NIC or Network Interface Card) in order to connect to the network. On most new laptops, this NIC is built in.
  • A cable with RJ45 connectors that will attach to your computer’s NIC card and the network wall jack. These cables will be plugged into the wall at the various campus stations. This cable needs to a category 5 or 6 cable (TIA 568A or TIA 568B specifications) and be a straight through cable (not a cross over cable).
  • TCP/IP Protocol – Most computers are configured with the TCP/IP protocol. However, if your laptop is not yet configured with TCP/IP, you must install it. Instructions on installing TCP/IP appear at the end of this document

Important: You MUST connect your Ethernet cable for wired access before starting your computer.

  • Plug the Ethernet cable into your computer’s NIC card if you are using wired access.
  • Start your computer.

Accessing Your Files (Wireless or Wired)

Windows XP, 2000, 95, ME

CIT provides secure, easy access to files on campus servers from a remote connection via WebDAV.  You are able to access your personal, department, and course network volumes on fpsa (faculty/staff and department shares) and fpsb (student and course shares) from a Windows PC or a Macintosh with Internet access.  (Note: This access cannot be provided for web shares on weba at this time.) Step-by-step instructions are provided on CIT’s eHelp website.

In addition, all students are given FTP access; you can access your files through the following method if you prefer. However, FTP is less secure than WebDAV.

  • Launch your Internet browser and move your cursor to the address field.
  • In the address field, type ftp://uwgreenbay\ yourusername : yourpassword@fpsb.uwgb.edu
  • You can also type ftp://uwgreenbay\yourusername@fpsb.uwgb.edu This method will prompt you for your password.

Logging on to network.

NOTE: You must substitute your assigned campus user name and your personal password to replace the green highlighted yourusername:yourpassword text. Make sure you also put a colon between the two.

Installing TCP/IP

IMPORTANT: You may need your Operating System CD to complete the setup procedure. Please see a lab consultant for information and assistance.

Your computer needs to be configured with the TCP/IP protocol so it can communicate with the network. The instructions will vary by operating system, so please select the appropriate set of instructions. Once you have completed the instructions, repeat Sections 1 – 3.

Setting for Operating Systems.
