Customize Your Toolbars

Most Macintosh and PC users have two toolbars displayed at the top of the screen in their Microsoft Office applications -- the standard and formatting toolbars. This week we'll look at adding and removing commands and features that may appear on these toolbars. We'll also tell you how to display other toolbars that might be useful to your work.

As an example:

In Microsoft Word, the Standard toolbar looks something like this:

You may decide that you'd like to delete some of the commands appearing on the toolbar and add others so that your Standard toolbar looks like this instead:

The steps below show how you can customize your toolbars to suite your needs.

To add or remove buttons from your toolbars:

1. Choose the View menu command, and select Toolbars, Customize. Within the Customize dialog box, click the Commands tab.

NOTE: You can also choose Customize from the Tools menu to open the Customize dialog box.

2. On the left side of the Customize dialog box, the different Categories of commands organized by menu name or type are listed. Clicking a category will change the list of commands that appear in the Commands box on the right side. You must select the category from which you want to choose a button to add.

3. To add a button to a toolbar that is displayed, drag the button from the Commands list to the toolbar.

For example, to add the Find command to your Standard toolbar, click Edit under Categories. Locate Find.., in the Commands list on the right and drag it to the Standard toolbar. When you see a vertical bar indicating the position of the new command on the toolbar, release the mouse button.

The button is added to the toolbar as shown below:

4. To delete a button from a toolbar, make sure the Customize dialog box is displayed and then drag the button off of the toolbar. Macintosh users can also right-click on a button and select Hide Command.

To Restore a Toolbar Back to the Default Setting:

1. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Customize. You can also click Customize on the Tools menu to open the Customize dialog box.
