Configuring Smartphones to synchronize with campus email (ActiveSync)

Android (Droid) | Apple iPhone, iPod, iPad | HP/Palm Pre & Pixi | Windows Mobile | Blackberry | Windows Phone 7

Microsoft ActiveSync is a technology that allows your mobile device to connect directly to our Exchange email servers to retrieve your email, calendar appointments, and contacts. This technology eliminates the need to connect your device to a computer to retrieve your information, which allows you to access your information wherever you are (within the scope of your data plan). ActiveSync has been licensed to most major mobile device vendors, including Apple, Palm, Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, Symbian, and many others. When shopping for a new device, be sure it supports Microsoft ActiveSync.

Smartphones running Windows Mobile 6.1 or higher should be able to auto-discover your email settings once you have launched ActiveSync and entered your full email address (username@uwgb.edu). If you have a different device, or for some reason auto-discovery fails, you can manually configure your device using the steps below:

droidAndroid (Droid) - Set up Corporate Email (Exchange Activesync)

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).
2. Touch Email.
3. Enter the exchange email address and password then touch Next. (for example: myusername@uwgb.edu)
4. Touch Exchange account.
5. Enter the exchange server settings in the appropriate fields:

  • username (for example: smitht@uwgb.edu or uwgreenbay\smitht)
  • password
  • Exchange Server: autodiscover.uwgb.edu

6. Ensure Use secure connection (SSL) and Accept all SSL certificates are checked; then click Next.

If you receive an error about not finding the server, or unable to make a connection, turn on your Wi-Fi under settings and try again.  Since update 2.2 some Droids are having trouble finding our servers through the carrier networks.  Getting on to the campus public Wi-Fi or your home Wi-Fi resolves this issue.
7. Touch the Email Checking frequency dropdown.
8. Touch the desired frequency.
9. Touch the Amount to synchronize dropdown and select amount.
10. Touch the desired account options; then touch Next.
11. Enter an account name and outgoing message name; then touch Done.
