Remote File Transfer via WebDAV

Windows PC Instructions | Macintosh Instructions | Vista Instructions

WebDAV is an abbreviation for Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning. WebDAV provides the functionality to create, change and move documents on a remote server (like FPSA or FPSB) as if they were stored in a local directory on your personal computer. It can replace FTP (File Transfer Protocol) and VPN for transferring files between campus network drives and home computers.

WebDAV is available to Windows or Macintosh users on fpsa (faculty/staff and department shares) and fpsb (student and course shares). Currently WebDAV cannot be enabled for web drives (weba).

Connecting to WebDAV from your off-campus Windows PC:

1. First, navigate to My Network Places. Depending on the setup of your PC:

  • If there is a "My Network Places" on the desktop, double-click to open it .
  • If there is no "My Network Places" on the desktop, click on the Start menu and select My Network Places.

2. Select Add a Network Place from the Network Tasks menu.

  1. The "Add Network Place Wizard" will appear. Click Next.

  2. Select Choose another network location and click Next.

    wizard appears

  3. Fill in the proper URL for the Internet or network address. It's important that the slashes ("//") are entered correctly.

    Other examples:

  4. After clicking Next, you are immediately prompted to login (authenticate) to the UWGB network. Be sure to include "@uwgb.edu" when entering your user name.

  5. The new Network Places will be created within the My Network Places window. You can right-click on these icons and rename the share to a more meaningful name like "Fall 2007 - Biology 310" for a course share.

  6. To open the new connection, keep the "Open this network place when I click Finish" box checked and click Finish. You will need to log in again using your UserID (in the form username@uwgb.edu) and password.

  7. Upon successful login, a folder window will open up revealing all of the files in your share space.

  8. A folder with the name just given will now appear in your My Network Places directory each time you need to access your files. Double-click it and log in with your NetID and Password to access your course files. (Please see notes below)

  9. It is recommended that you drag the files or folders you want to use to your home computer's desktop. Below is an example of a network file transported to the home desktop. The document was then edited and copied back to the network share.

12. If you connect to another server (for example, you create a mapped drive to a share on " fpsb" in addition to "fpsa"), you will prompted again to log in to the network. (see Step 2)

NOTE: You may want to add https://*.uwgb.edu to your list of trusted sites. Within Internet Explorer, select Tools, Internet Options, Security. Select Trusted Sites, type in the url and select Add.

Other examples include:

  • https://fpsa.uwgb.edu/compserv (faculty department share)
  • https://fpsb.uwgb.edu/theypa31 (student personal share)
  • https://fpsb.uwgb.edu/coa331sec4 (student class share)

2. While Connecting to the Server, you will be prompted to authenticate to the UWGB network. Use the image below as a guide for entering the Domain, Name, and Password.

3. The connected network drive will then appear on your desktop as a 'network' drive. (See image below)

4. Open the drive, select the document(s) you want to edit and drag them to the desktop. Edit and Save the documents back to the desktop. To update your files on the network, simply drag the items from the desktop back to the network drive. If you use the same file names, you will be prompted to overwrite the existing file(s).

Connecting to WebDAV from your off-campus Macintosh (10.3.9)

1. To connect to your share via WebDAV on a Macintosh computer running 10.3.9, you will need to purchase the application Transmit from Panic Software. You can download a trial version and purchase it at http://www.panic.com/transmit/. All earlier versions of Mac OS are not supported.

2. When you launch Transmit, you will get a configuration window. Make sure you have all of the following properly filled out:

  • WebDAV HTTPS as your Protocol
  • Only the server name in the Server field (fpsa.uwgb.edu or fpsb.uwgb.edu)
  • Either your username or the share name you are connecting to under Initial Path (goldmanj, compserv, coa331sec4,etc)
  • Your username and password in the appropriate fields

Transmit Configuration

3. From there you would use Transmit like you would with a normal FTP program. Refer to the built in documentation for more help.

Other Examples:

  • https://fpsb.uwgb.edu/theypa31 (student personal share)
  • https://fpsb.uwgb.edu/coa331sec4 (course share)

7. You are prompted to authenticate to the UWGB network.

8. Name the location if you prefer something other than the name automatically created. (optional)
