Insert Path and Filename into Word Documents

Have you ever picked up a document from your desk and wondered 'where in the world' it was stored on your computer? The easiest way to keep the connection between hard copy and soft (electronic) source is to insert a path and filename into each document that you create. If you are unfamiliar with the "path" terminology, here is an example:

m:\Microsoft Office\Word\Orientation Letter.doc

The document "Orientation Letter " is located in a folder named "Word", which is contained within another folder called "Microsoft Office". Windows Explorer shows both the letter and the share name is its hierarchical display.

Do the following to insert the path and filename into your document as a Footer:

    Select the Insert tab.

Select the Footer down-arrow and move your cursor to the bottom of footer choices and select "Edit Footer".

    edit footer

Now a new ribbon appears for the "design" portion of the footer. Select Quick Parts from the insert group and then select Field.

From the Field window select Document Information from the Categories section. Select Filename from the Field names section. Also you can format your filename under the Format options to your liking. Then check the box for Add path to filename and select OK.

Your "Footer" will now display the path and filename. (you may need to first save the document and view the print preview to see the actual path.

Will the path and filename update automatically?

Absolutely! If you save the document in a different location or rename the document, the path and filename will automatically update.
