Anti-Virus Software for Home Use

UW-Green Bay has purchased "Home Use Rights" for McAfee anti-virus software for employees of the University and currently enrolled students. This agreement allows students, faculty and staff to download VirusScan for Windows or Virex for Macintosh from the CIT Web site and install it on their home computers. The university is offering this software in an effort to ensure that campus and home systems remain free of harmful and malicious virus programs.

By using this software on your home computer, you are acknowledging that you are currently enrolled as a student or employed with the university. You are also acknowledging that you agree to abide by our license agreement, which requires you to delete this software from your system in the event that you are no longer affiliated with UW-Green Bay or the University terminates its licensing agreement with Network Associates. CIT will keep a log of all individuals who download the software and will notify them of changes in the terms of our agreement.

Before you may download the anti-virus software, you will be required to enter your campus network username and password. This validates your affiliation with the University and ensures that you are legally entitled to use the software. Once students are enrolled for a class, they are able to download the software. There are three main tasks that need to be completed:

  1. Electronically sign and submit the User Agreement Form
  2. Download the Windows or Macintosh anti-virus software
  3. Install the software on your home computer
The university will not guarantee the stability of this product with users' home systems or provide technical support regarding its installation or use. Installation instructions are included on the CIT web site as you proceed through the download process. For further information on these products, refer to Network Associates Web site.

You will want to be aware that the Windows software download can be up to 21 Megabytes, while the Macintosh software download can be up to 29 Megabytes. You'll need to plan for download times accordingly, especially if you have a dialup connection (a 20Meg file can take 140 minutes over dialup). Students may want to download the software in our General Computer Access lab to d:\temp and then burn a CD. Please contact a lab consultant in Instructional Services 1129 if you have questions about this.

We hope that this opportunity to acquire the latest virus protection software for your home computer will be of benefit to you. The software download site is http://www.uwgb.edu/compserv/software
