There are two student General Computer Access (GCA) labs at UW-Green Bay. The main lab, located in Instructional Services 1129, has 162 Gateway PCs running Windows XP and 40 Macintoshes running OS 10.3. There are three PC classrooms (IS1129A, IS1129E, and IS1129J) and a Macintosh classroom (IS1129B). IS1129E is a multimedia classroom with video and audio editing hardware and software. In addition, there are four group project rooms with two PCs and multimedia equipment that students can reserve for group work. Five Macintoshes in one of the back alcoves of the lab are also configured for multimedia production. The main GCA lab has black & white laser printers, color printers (standard and tabloid), scanners, and special adjustable tables to accommodate wheelchairs. Student consultants are available to provide assistance in this main IS General Computer Access lab.
The second General Access lab is located on the 3rd floor of the library and has 50 Gateway PCs. This lab has a black & white laser printer, a color printer, a scanner, and a disability workstation. There are also PCs in 10 project rooms on the 4th, 5th, and 6th floors of the library.
Students are required to log on to all lab computers using their network account. Once logged on, they have access to instructional software, their personal network volume, course volumes, and network printers. The PassPrint print accounting system is in place to support printing in all student labs.
The IS General Access lab houses 162 PCs: 27 with Pentium IV 3.2 GHz processors, 65 with Pentium IV 3.0 GHz processors, and 70 with Pentium IV 2.4 GHz processors. All have DVD/CDRW combo drives, 512 MB of RAM and 1.44 MB floppies. We also have 40 Intel iMacs with 1 GIG memory, and DVD burners. The library's General Access lab has 50 PCs with 3.2 GHz processors. Number of computers by lab location
All registered students have Windows 2003 network/email accounts, which they must use to log into workstations in the student labs. This network account is also used to access campus email through Outlook Web Access or log into Desire2Learn, our campus course management software. (Note that each student also has a Student Information System account with a password that is independent of the network account password.)
Student network/email account usernames consist of the first four characters of the last name, the first and middle name initials, and day of the month they were born (e.g., smithja09). Initial passwords are the last eight digits of the students Passport ID number. If you are a continuing student, your account password remains the same as when you left in the previous semester.
When logging into a Windows PC, a student's personal network volume will be available as drive M. When logging into a Macintosh computer, a student's network volume is available as the Home directory, which appears in the Sidebar of Finder windows and in Open and Save dialog boxes. Files stored on the M drive are backed up by CIT and can be restored at the student's request. The amount of storage space allotted to individual students for files is 100 MB. Student space for email is limited to 50MB.
The PassPrint printing system is installed in the General Computer Access labs, the Library, and in other specialty labs. After sending a document to a printer from any lab workstation, the student will be prompted to supply a Job ID and password for their printout. The student must then go to a Print Release station to print their document using their Passport ID. He/she must select their printout and supply the password. In the IS General Access lab, there are four HP LaserJet 4000 black & white laser print stations, a Tektronix Phaser 850 color solid ink print station, and a Xerox Phaser 7700DN tabloid color printer.
Students receive 120 free pages of black and white laser printing on their campus Passport ID for the academic year (a $6.00 value). This is paid for by the student technology fee. Black and white laser printing costs five cents per page, color laser printing costs twenty-five cents per page, and tabloid color printing costs $.50 per page. These charges are deducted from the students PassPrint account when they print. Students can add money for printing to their PassPoints at value transfer stations or at any cash register that can handle Passport ID transactions.
The following software applications are provided in the General Access labs.
