Department Purchases - Personal Digital Assistants

Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) are becoming more and more popular in today's world of technology. Palm devices are just one example of the many PDA's in use today. The Palm is a portable, hand-held device that allows you to download and access your Outlook calendar, email Inbox, Task List, and Memo pad while on the road. You are able to synchronize your Palm with Outlook on your computer through software installed on your computer and a Palm cradle attached to your computer's serial or USB port.

Phone based devices are able to sync through the cellular network to keep the device constantly updated with the University email system.  Any phone based device should support “ActiveSync” for proper integration with our systems.  Departments looking to purchase these devices should be aware that state contracts and requirements are in place for cellular phones with data services.  Contact Purchasing for the latest information regarding state rules on these devices.  Individuals purchasing devices are free to purchase any device they wish.

The Palm integrates easily with the e-mail system on campus. Functionality included allows portability of the Outlook Calendar, Inbox, Task List, and Memo pad. However, it does not synchronize with other email folders created under your Inbox. Hundreds of freeware, shareware, and commercial software applications are available to add other features to the Palm. The latest Palm devices and comparisons are list at: http://store.palm.com/

Although many other hand-held devices are available, keep in mind that only the Palm series is supported by CIT at UW-Green Bay. The UW-Green Bay Help Desk provides basic support for the Palm in that we will assist you in interfacing with the campus Outlook application.  There are no hardware repair services provided by CIT for any of these devices.

CIT does not recommend devices although Blackberry devices specifically are strongly discouraged.  However, feel free to compare features to discover which Palm organizer options are available in various models. There are no state contract prices available for the Palms. Users can purchase the products from a variety of sources. Users should be able to get educational pricing to save approximately 5% off list prices. CIT has purchased Palm products from CDW-G (http://www.cdwg.com) as one possible source.
