Just in time for the fall semester, CIT has announced a new technology service called GBShare! GBShare is a web-based content management system that provides a file sharing and collaboration environment for UW-Green Bay students, faculty, and staff. All campus users are allocated space in GBShare, in addition to their usual personal network space for storing files (drive M).
You can log into GBShare using your campus network username and password. http://gbshare.uwgb.edu A link to GBShare has been added to the left column of both the Current Students and Faculty & Staff campus web pages.
Following are some of the highlights of GBShare:
- Faculty and staff are given one gigabyte of space in GBShare and students are given 300 MB of space. There is a one gigabyte/hour bandwidth limit for students.
- You are able to upload files into GBShare and then grant access to these files to anyone on campus or anyone off campus who has access to email.
- You are able to control access to your files without involving CIT. You may grant read only access or you may allow write access to others with whom you wish to collaborate in updating documents.
- You are able to send email links to other GBShare users to grant access to your files. Likewise, you may send email “tickets” to colleagues off campus. You do not need a GBShare account to access files via tickets.
- We would like to encourage you to use GBShare as an alternative to sending large email attachments or burning CDs and DVDs to share files. This will save space in campus mailboxes and will ensure that others always have access to the most current version of any shared file. ONE FILE --- ONE VERSION FOR EVERYONE!!
- GBShare email links provide a more secure method of sharing confidential information. Campus users must authenticate to access files on GBShare via links, and then only those to whom you’ve granted permission can access them.
- There are mechanisms in GBShare to track (and restore) document versions, lock files while they’re being updated, log all access and changes made to files, and request email notifications when your files are accessed.
Additional GBShare spaces can be created for committees, departments, courses, or other group projects. You will need to designate an administrator and backup administrator to manage and maintain each group space.
Video training, documentation, and FAQs are available on the GBShare logon page to help you get started. Special requests for training should be directed to blohowid@uwgb.edu or theyerlp@uwgb.edu.
