Prof. Clifford Abbott, Information and Computing Sciences, works
closely with the Oneida Tribe of Indians to preserve and develop the Oneida
langauge. Abbott is responsible for the conceptual framework of "An Oneida
Dictionary" and an Oneida reference grammar. Richard Anderson, UW-Green Bay bursar, is a member of the Finance Committee of Options for Independent Living. Prof. Scott Ashmann, Education, is conducting a study that will provide the state with baseline information about the impact of environmental education efforts. Prof. Derryl Block, Nursing, is a member of the Village of Hobart Urban Forestry Committee, the Brown County Tobacco Free Coalition and the Wisconsin Public Health Association. Block also is a Robert Wood Johnson executive nurse fellow. The national fellowship focuses on leading the country's health-care system in the 21st century. Ken Bothof, Director of Athletics, is a member of the board of directors of the Green Bay YMCA. Prof. Peter Breznay, Information and Computing Sciences, gave a keynote address on "The Future of the Internet" at the Manitowoc-Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce Vision 2011 Conference. Breznay analyzed technological and economic trends affecting commercial use of Internet technologies as well as Internet-related trends in developing communications infrastructure. Mona Christensen, Outreach and Extension, travels to Burma annually to provide training for orphanage workers in human development, problem-solving skills, leadership, etc. She serves on the Web development team at Bayside Christian Fellowship and wrote a capital stewardship manual for churches to use to raise funds for building expansion, ministry expansion and debt reduction. Juliet Cole, assistant to the director of the Institute for Learning Partnership, is founder and leader of the Nia Dance group, an African-American University/Community dance group that performs at campus and community events. She is a supervisor for UW-Green Bay's East High and Washington Middle School mentoring programs. She serves on boards of directors of the United Way, Girl Scouts, Fort Howard/Jefferson Family Neighborhood Resource Center and various other organizations. Prof. David Coury, Humanistic Studies, is director of the Green Bay Film Society, a nonprofit community group that co-sponsors the Green Bay International Film Series at the Neville Public Museum. Lisa DeLeeuw, University Advancement, is on the board of the YWCA of Green Bay-De Pere and is chairperson of the YWCA's Corporate and Individual Gifts Committee. Prof. Michael Draney, Natural and Applied Sciences, gives two-day workshops on "Spiders: Ecology and Identification" at the UW-Milwaukee Field Station at Cedarburg Bog. Students and the public attend the workshops. Draney also identifies and provides information about spiders, insects and other invertebrates for the public and local and regional businesses. Prof. Jeff Entwistle, Communication and the Arts, has served on the board of directors of the Green Bay Community Theater. Tom Erdman, curator of the Richter Museum of Natural History, and Gary Fewless, curator of the Herbarium, participated in an advisory conference for management of rare plant and animal species in national forests of Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan. Prof. Scott Furlong, Public and Environmental Affairs, coordinated local participation in the national "DebateWatch" project during the 2004 presidential campaign. Campus and community members watched the presidential debates together and then discussed what they saw. UW-Green Bay art professor Carol Emmons was selected to present an exhibition at the Watrous Gallery of the Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters in Madison. The presentation was the last of the initial exhibits selected to inaugurate the gallery in Madison's new Overture Center for the Arts, and draws on both the architecture of the building and the site's history. Prof. Victoria Goff, Information and Computing Science, is editor of Voyageur, the periodical published by the Brown County Historical Society. Prof. Regan Gurung, Human Development, has worked with members of St. Vincent, St. Mary's and Bellin hospitals on the Pain and Comfort Team to make pain relief knowledge more readily available and understandable. He has participated on the Brown County Tobacco Free Coalition and the Greater Green Bay Chamber of Commerce Wellness Committee. He was a featured speaker at the National Wellness Conference in Stevens Point and has spoken at several nurses' training conferences in Green Bay. He also was a moderator of the PBS-sponsored "By the People" citizen forum in Green Bay in January 2004. Leanne Hansen, director of the Cofrin Library, assisted in grassroots efforts to raise building funds for the Howard Branch of the Brown County Library. She is a member of the Brown County Homebuilders Auxiliary, the Crime Prevention Association of Brown County and Pilgrim Lutheran Church. Jay Harris, International Projects Coordinator, coaches cross country runners at De Pere Middle School. Harris also coaches a running club for kids, the Distance Demons, which has an award winning Web site, www.distancedemons.org. Prof. Catherine Henze, Humanistic Studies, is a performing viola da gamba player in two ensembles, Wyndesong in Green Bay and The Silver Swans of Minneapolis. Prof. Curt Heuer, Communication and the Arts, initiated the art students' "Empty Bowls" project that annually has a ceramic bowl/chili sale to benefit various community shelters and food pantries. Prof. Robert Howe, Natural and Applied Sciences, organizes the annual Nicolet National Forest Bird survey, the longest-running volunteer bird survey in the U.S. National Forest System. Howe is assisted by current and former UW-Green Bay students. Melissa Jackson, UW-Green Bay legal counsel and University ombudsperson, helped establish a Stork's Nest center in Green Bay. The center, sponsored by the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and the March of Dimes, helps low-income pregnant teens get the medical care and supplies they need. Jackson is a member of Zeta Phi Beta. UW-Green Bay music faculty member and tenor Benjamin Brecher performed for a statewide audience on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Sunday Afternoon Live from the Chazen." Brecher also has performed the "Star Spangled Banner" at numerous UW-Green Bay Phoenix men's and women's basketball games. Prof. Peter Kellogg, Humanistic Studies, has been involved with many community activities having to do with diversity and civil liberties. He has been a driving force behind the Multicultural Center in Green Bay, organized a mentoring program for students of color at Green Bay East High School and has been a spokesperson for the American Civil Liberties Union UW-Green Bay Prof. Michael Kraft and Professor Emeritus David Littig participated in a community forum on campaign finance reform and government corruption in Wisconsin. The forum, held at UW-Green Bay, was organized by Common Cause in Wisconsin. Prof. Michael Kraft, Public and Environmental Affairs, is a member of the Science and Technical Advisory Committee, an independent committee that advises public officials on issues related to area water quality. He is a member of the board of directors of the Lake Michigan Federation, a Chicago-based citizen advocacy group. He sits on the citizens advisory committee for Georgia-Pacific Corp. He gives frequent lectures in the community on environmental policy, international population policy, and institutions and processes of government. Prof. William Laatsch, Urban and Regional Studies, serves on the Wisconsin Historic Preservation Review Board. Education Outreach director Carmen Leuthner accompanied more than a dozen Wisconsin K-12 teachers to the Kennedy Space Center in January 2004 to get a first-hand view of the aerospace industry and make connections between the math, science and technology content they teach. Prof. Scott Furlong, Prof. Michael Kraft, Prof. Tim Meyer, Prof. Terri Johnson and Prof. Emeritus David Littig are frequent commentators in local and state news media on elections and politics. ...more |
