What can I do if I have not seen a student for a while and I think that he or she may be missing? How do I handle classroom disruptions? What should a student do if he/she feels that they have not been treated fairly by a faculty or staff member? 1. If I am being harassed by a student, may I call Student Affairs? A. You may call if you perceive you are being harassed. We can discuss constructive actions you can take. If your situation is serious or life threatening, call Public Safety or 9-911. If you are experiencing harassment through e-mail, telephone, fax, or other related means, you can call us at 920-465-2152.   Back to top 2. If I suspect a student is responsible for academic misconduct, may I call Student Affairs? A. Instructors are encouraged to meet with the student first to determine if an alleged academic misconduct can be confirmed or supported. If after the meeting, the instructor still feels that academic misconduct has occurred, he/she can call Student Affairs to identify process elements (evidence of misconduct, a detailed letter of the misconduct, possible sanctions and academic hearings /or appeal).   Back to top 3. What kind of student issues can I refer to the Office of the Dean of Students? A. The Office of the Dean of Students supports students in answering questions, solving problems and in coping with the unexpected emergencies of life that affect their academic performance. Faculty and staff are encouraged to refer students to the Office of the Dean of Students if they notice anything of concern about a particular student, i.e. the student’s grades drop dramatically, the student appears to be having personal or family issues, etc. While our office does not expect you to serve as a counselor to students, we do request your assistance in ensuring that students in need are noticed and receive assistance.   Back to top 4. What can I do if I have not seen a student for a while and I think that he or she may be missing? A. Contact the Office of the Dean of Students at 920-465-2152 or your department chairperson and let us assist you.   Back to top 5. How do I handle classroom disruptions? A. While the primary responsibility for managing the classroom environment rests with the instructor; students who engage in any prohibited or unlawful acts that result in disruption of a class may be directed by the instructor to leave the class for the remainder of the class period. Institutional non-academic discipline is administrated through the Dean of Students Office in accordance with UWS Chapter 17. If a student appears to be a threat to self or others, contact Campus Police at (920) 465-2300 or 9-911 for immediate assistance.   Back to top 6. What should a student do if he/she feels that they have not been treated fairly by a faculty or staff member? A. Differences of opinion and misunderstandings can occur in any community and the University of Wisconsin Green-Bay has procedures that ensure your student’s right to file a grievance or make a complaint. Approaching the faculty or staff person with which there may be a problem to discuss the issue is usually the first step. Where that fails there are a number of formal grievance procedures that might be appropriate.   Back to top
