Biography & Resume

Kristy Deetz, associate professor and Chair of the Art Discipline at the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay, received her MFA in painting and drawing from The Ohio State University. Kristy has taught painting and drawing at a number of universities and art schools over the past twenty years and frequently gives encaustic painting workshops at art centers such as Anderson Ranch, OxBow, and Penland. Her extensive exhibition record includes competitive, invitational, and solo exhibitions throughout the United States. At present, she has separate series of work in painting, sculpture, and digital media. Two recent series, Veiling Desire (acrylic paintings on silk) and Relativity Veils (oil paintings on wooden panels) challenge and play with expectations of what painting does as it lies on the crease of abstraction and representation. These related series also investigate Deleuze's ideas of internal versus external and virtual verses actual. Her encaustic and oil paintings revise traditional images of drapery and still life and explore how image and process reveal and conceal substance and spirit. Carved wooden reliefs painted with encaustic, her "book" series are visual metaphors of the book form and autobiographical explorations. Playing off of concepts such as palimpsest, aporia, and table of contents—these pieces operate as visual puns and connect ideas of language to body and earth. Her new work in digital media revisions images from her drapery paintings into landscapes that play with the idea of mise en abyme, "placing into infinity" or "placing into the abyss," to formally create a fractal space of endless reflexivity.
