ADA Student Membership

The Student Council Community of Interest (CoI)

This is the best kept secret of the ADA Student Membership. As a student member of ADA you are automatically a CoI member, you just have to register. The Student Council is represented by a Student Council Advisory Committee, whose members are elected annually (don’t forget: as a member of ADA you are able to vote in all elections).

The Student Council is way for students to network with each other and discuss student-related issues. At the website you will find discussions, files, articles, specific databases, event calendar, note board, and polls.

The most commonly used feature is the discussion board; this is where the networking begins and your questions can be answered. The discussions range anywhere from stress relief tips, to views on obesity and insurance coverage. Here is an example of a discussion post:

I am interested in this question also.  I have little to no experience in dietetics/food.  I have a little volunteer experience related to dietetics and some volunteer experience unrelated. I have only held one office in a club during college. Does this make me look really bad? I am a non-traditional student, I work full time right now. Is that in my favor?

I would appreciate any feedback regarding this situation.

Students with related experience can respond to this and other students with similar questions can get the answers they also need, but had never asked. The answers available to you are invaluable and endless.

Testimonials

The following are testimonials of students like you who have found the CoI useful.

ADA membership has given me the opportunity to serve the student body and develop my leadership skills by being elected chair of the Student Council Advisory Committe.  Membership allows me to communication and share ideas with students around the country through the CoI.  I enjoy reading the Journal each month which helps me stay on top of current research.  The Daily News is must for anyone in the dietetic field. It provides an email of the hottest food and nutrition news.  The ADA Journal online has saved me alot of time on research topics.  I use the Nutrition Care Manual alot.  This resource provides nutrition assessment, nutrition diagnosis, nutrition intervention and nutrition monitoring and evaluation.  In addition the Nutrition Care Manual provides many resources such as a weekly sample diet for 1600, 1800, and 2000 kcal diets to promote weight loss as well as Gluten Free and DM diets that I give to my patients to help them with change.

These are just a few of the many resources available to us as students!

Hi, I'm Truly and I became a member of ADA because of the many resources it offered.  I get the nutrition journal each month and that helps so much with my schooling.  I would highly recommend that you spend the extra 40-something dollars and take advantage of all it has to offer.

By far the opportunity for scholarships especially for the internship is a wonderful benefit
I also find it interesting to discover what will be available to us once we become R.D. by way of continuing education and grants.
being a student member ultimately allows me to feel connected to my future career today.

Being a ADA Student member has definitely kept me "in the know". I strive to absorb the enormous amount of information available. It's very motivating when I open an email or get a journal in the mail to see what everyone in the field is doing. It sparks new ideas and builds connections to others. I use alot of the topics and discussions for our SDA monthly newsletter that I produce. It's has been unquestionably worth it.

As a student member there are so many wonderful benefits! For me, networking with other professionals has helped me the most. Not to mention the great scholarship opportunities, the Journal, ADA's Student Scoop Newsletter, and the many ways to build your resume! I highly recommend any student who has an interest in dietetics/nutrition to consider spending a little extra money to access these opportunities. Who knows, the $40 may be paid off with a scholarship before you know it!
