Notetaking Tips

  1. Go to class! Be on time. Many professors give important information during the first five minutes of the class.
  2. Ask for feedback by asking the student, by use of post it note, about the quality of your notes.
  3. Focus on the essence of the lecture or what the professor is trying to explain as accurately as possible
  4. Write legibly using a dark pen.
  5. Use white space effectively. If you space out the main ideas, the student will be able to process the notes more effectively.
  6. Make points for emphasis. Underline important words and phrases or use any marks such as asterisks, starts, circles, etc.
  7. Use examples given by the instructor. Include diagrams and illustrations given on the blackboard or on charts brought in by the instructor. Be sure to indicate where the information was obtained.
  8. Take notes even during videos or presentations.
  9. Photocopy and deliver notes in a timely manner making sure they are dated, labeled, stapled, recorded and placed in the correct student's notes file. Problems with the copier should be directed to DS Office Staff.
  10. Above all, maintain confidentiality of the student you are taking notes for at all times.
