Confidentiality

You will be given the student’s first name and first letter of his/her last name. If you know who the student is that you will be taking notes for, please keep that information confidential. The student may not want to be identified as the student needing notetaking services so please do not approach the student. Respect the student's privacy - share information about the student on a need-to-know basis, such as to your back-up notetaker (see below) or with the course instructor. Do not disclose or identify the student or his/her disability to other students. The student's contact information should remain confidential as well. Disclosing information to others will be grounds for immediate termination.

Taking Notes

Take clear and concise notes during the class session. If you notice the student for whom you are taking notes has been absent for more than several classes, please contact the Disability Services (DS) Office. The student is responsible for getting the notes if he/she has missed class. Please try to incorporate the suggestions from the Tips for Good Notetaking in your notes. This information is available on both the website and in your packet.

Printing off materials from D2L and giving the material to the student is not sufficient. Supplement these materials with information presented during lecture and discussion/lab sections.

A notetaker is not a tutor for the student. You may, of course, study with the student if you'd like, but it is not required. Your job is to take notes for the student and provide a copy of your notes in his/her folder twice a week and especially before each exam. The DS Office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00AM to 4:30PM.

Photocopies

You can photocopy your notes in the DS Office (Student Services Building Room 1700) free of charge. The DS staff will show you how to operate the copy machine. If you decide to use loose leaf paper, you can use the photocopier machine in the Counseling and Health Office. You will need to be given a pass code to use that copier.

There are carbonless notebooks for those classes where immediate access is critical or for when there are not opportunities to get to the DS Office between the hours of 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. You will be notified when this is needed.

Delivery/Recording Notes

Since a student may be getting notes for more than one class it is important that you label the notes and staple them. When placing the notes in the student’s file, please record the class and date on the pink DS Notetaking Record form. For multiple students please remember to record class and date on all pink forms. This is documentation for both you and the student that your notes were delivered in a timely manner.

If you are Absent

If you plan on being absent from class or cannot show at the last minute, it is your responsibility to obtain notes from the class you missed. Please arrange with another student in class to copy his/her notes for the classes you missed. If the notes are crucial, (i.e. there is a test during the next class session), please have the back up notetaker come to our office and photocopy his/her notes. The DS Office staff can assist the back up notetaker to ensure the notes are put in the correct file.

If you Drop the Class

If you drop the class any time during the semester, please let the DS Office and the faculty know as soon as possible. This will assist us to find a new notetaker quickly. It will be helpful if you can assist us in securing a new notetaker for the remainder of the semester by recommending another student from the class.

Feedback

Please be conscientious about the quality of your notes. Communicate with the student via notes in his/her file for the opportunity to share feedback. Ask the course instructor to review your notes. This will not only assist the student, but will also provide a valuable study aid for you.

Payment

The DS Office pays notetakers $20.00 per credit hour (i.e. $60 for a 3 credit class). If you are taking notes for more than one student in the same class, unfortunately, we can still only pay you once. If you have multiple students and need assistance with copying you can provide one copy to the DS staff and they will make the remaining copies for you.

We encourage notetakers to consider taking notes on a volunteer basis. We will provide a certificate outlining the number of volunteer hours at the end of the semester.

If you have worked on campus and provided the university with direct deposit information, you will receive your notetaking payment at the end of the semester. Please remember that your payment will be included with your other on-campus job, if applicable.

For students who have not been employed on campus, you will need to complete the W9 form along with Note taking Agreement form on date of hire. If you obtain an on-campus job after completing the W9 or your address changes, please notify the DS Office as soon as possible.
