The Handbook
Introduction
The Office of Disability Services provides customized academic support services for students with documented
physical, sensory, mental or learning disabilities. These services include notetaking assistance, test
proctoring, assistance using the UWGB library, typing, and other individualized academic services as needed.
All services are provided free of charge to eligible students. The Coordinator of Disability Services (CDS)
is responsible for such services as physical and academic accommodations, procurement of specialized equipment
or supplies, and coordination of services with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation.
The purpose of this document is to describe the policies and procedures that guide the provision of services to
students with disabilities by the Disability Services office and staff. UWGB and Disability Services Office
strongly support the principle that all qualified individuals have the right to equal access to the University.
Students with disabilities shall be guaranteed access to services, which are necessary to accommodate their
disability and assist them in achieving their full potential as students.
It is our belief, however, that the student must also assume some responsibility in this relationship. First,
the accommodations, services and adjustments requested by students with disabilities must be reasonable and
necessary. A student who is capable of typing cannot reasonably request typing services out of convenience
rather than necessity. Library assistance must not exceed that which is necessary to accommodate a disability,
so while assistance locating and acquiring reference sources are reasonable, doing library research for a
student is not. Second, the request for services must be made well in advance of the need. Most services
require at least three days advance notice. Some services require several weeks lead time, as in the case of
books on tape or interpreters for the deaf/hearing impaired. The quality of the services provided by the
Disability Services Office is greatly enhanced when ample time is provided to arrange these services.
It is the goal of the Disability Services Office and staff to accommodate each student with a disability in as
complete and comprehensive a way as possible in order to assure that his/her academic needs are met. The
Coordinator of Disability Services, working in close cooperation with the student him/herself, can help assure
that this goal is realized.
