Old Buda

Budapest, like Paris, is an ancient city with mostly 18th and 19th century buildings. It was originally two cities: Buda, west of the Danube on a bluff, and Pest to the east on the flood plain. Not much ancient survives in Pest. The oldest buildings are on the Buda heights from which there is a fabulous view of the Danube.

The Synagogue

Thanks to Raoul Wallenberg, who has a street and a monument in Budapest, neither of which I saw, many Hungarian Jews survived. This is the largest functioning synagogue in Europe.
