Manned spacecraft have provided some truly amazing and spectacular images of
volcanoes. This view was taken from the International Space Station in late May,
2006. On an
uncharacteristically clear day in the Aleutians, astronaut Jeffrey Williams caught Cleveland
Volcano just after it began erupting. The plume is blowing toward the bottom of
the picture. Air rising over the opposite side of the island causes fog to
condense on that shore.Location: 52o 49' 19" N 169o
