On the Way to Delos

The Commercial and Residential Section

Athens, insanely jealous of Delos as a potential rival, decreed that nobody could be a citizen of Delos. Pregnant women had to give birth elsewhere so nobody could claim to be born on Delos. Also nobody was supposed to die on Delos (was the penalty for violating the law death?)

Nevertheless, the priests needed a place to live, and shops to buy things at, so there was a residential and trading area on Delos.

The Temple Precinct

Mount Kynthos, highest point on Delos (113 m) has a sacred cave (visible here as a black dot above and right of the four pillars).
"J. Dunn, Glasgow, 1873." After 100 years, graffiti becomes historic in its own right.

The Lions of Delos

A row of lions once guarded the Sacred Way on Delos. One is missing, carried off by the Venetians.
And here's the missing lion, outside the Arsenale in Venice. He has a new head to replace the worn ancient one.
He looks like Snagglepuss.

Heavens to murgatroyd! I am so embarrassed, e-ven!

The Sacred Lake

The sacred lake originally dictated the layout of the temple area. Now it is kept drained to curb mosquitos.

Sanctuary of Dionysus

Lots of things in antiquity are not what they seem. This, on the other hand, is exactly what it seems.
In an age without Viagara you prayed to the god Dionysus. The name came down into English as Dennis.

No warranties, express or implied, as to the endowments of any actual humans named Dennis.

Departing Delos
