Because of the differing regional lithologies, the color palette for maps of Canada is somewhat different from that for the U.S.

The United States, except for Alaska, is entirely subdivided into counties (called parishes in Louisiana). In some states, cities are independent and have county-level governments as well. In Canada, the Maritime Provinces and territory along the St. Lawrence also have counties. Elsewhere, provincial subdivisions are called districts, regional municipalities, or census subdivisions. They are shown for geographic reference but generally do not have the significance they do in the U.S. District boundaries are not shown here because they are so sparse.

Major highways are red, interstates are gold. Refer to a road map for route numbers - this map is busy enough without them! I recommend using the plain map for geologic interpretation, with this map used for more specific location information. There are some roads in Quebec but none in the Ontario portion of the map.

The road leading off to the east and off the edge of the map is the Trans-Taiga Highway, originally built to service James Bay power projects. The terninus, off the edge of the map, is the remotest spot by road from any town in North America, 745 kilometres (463 miles).

Maps like this demonstrate how misleading it is to print only maps of high-interest areas at a generous scale. Many people have a vague idea there are Paleozoic rocks around Hudson Bay. Maps at a common scale show that you could drop entire U.S. states like Ohio, which are also covered by Paleozoc rocks, onto the Hudson Bay platform, with room to spare.
