0113D - Professionalism and Classroom Management for Beginning Teachers (For Mentors)

This course is open to all MENTORS of newly hired teachers in the West De Pere School District.

Course Description:

This class is designed to help new teacher mentors with guiding new teachers in the development of skills and knowledge that will increase their success in the classroom. It will help beginning teachers to gain deeper understanding in the areas of professionalism and classroom management. In the area of professionalism, participants will learn practices that ensure the new teacher’s interactions with faculty and staff, students, parents, and community partners are positive, constructive, and collaborative. In the area of classroom management, participants will learn to create positive learning environments by using research-based and highly practical systems for preventing disruptive behavior and influencing appropriate behavior among students.

  • Prerequisite: Graduate Standing (Must have earned a bachelor’s degree). Eligibility – all MENTORS of newly hired teachers in the West De Pere School District are eligible to enroll; others interested in enrolling need to contact Amy LaPierre at alapierre@wdpsd.com or 920-337-1393, extension 8029.

  • Schedule: Mondays, September 23 and November 11, 2013 (3:45-5:15 p.m.); Mondays, January 13 and March 31, 2014 (3:45-5:15 p.m.). Choose from two of the following workshops – October 2, November 6, December 11, 2013; January 22, February 19, March 5, or April 23, 2014 (4:00-6:00 p.m.). Requirements also include active participation in the online discussion forum, individual monthly meetings with your mentee (scheduled at mutually agreed upon times), written reflection of a videotaped lesson, and classroom observation. All assignments for this course will be completed by May 1, 2014.
    (The official course start and end dates for fee and grade reporting purposes are September 23, 2013 to May 20, 2014.)
