Research Interests: Although much of my early work involved bird population ecology, I have published recent articles on Great Lakes coastal wetlands, environmental indicators, landscape ecology, and forest dynamics; my students have investigated a wide diversity of organisms ranging from soil invertebrates to mammals. As Director of the Cofrin Center for Biodiversity, I am co-leader of the Wabikon Forest Dynamics Plot in northern Wisconsin, and I administer numerous research grants involving student researchers and collaborators from other institutions.

Other Interests: Family, travel, photography, sports, hiking, music
