Do you want to learn more science?
Do you want to enhance your capacity to teach science?
Do you want to earn graduate credits without paying tuition?
Then read on…
Many elementary school teachers freely admit that
- they do not like science
- they do not understand even basic scientific ideas themselves
- they do not feel that they have the capacity to understand science concepts, let alone teach science
- they had poor experiences as an elementary student in science classes
However, many of these same teachers quickly realize that the approach they have been using to teach science in the early years of their teaching career is inadequate.
- First, they realize that there are many student questions that they are unable to answer.
- Second, they realize the importance of science for their students, but they lack the skills and teaching strategies to help their students develop deep understandings.
- Third, these teachers realize their lack of science content knowledge limits their implementation of hands-on science activities when using an inquiry-based approach to teaching science.
The Einstein Science Institutes for Elementary School Teachers (ESI4EST) have been designed to address these concerns. There are two purposes:
- To advance the participants’ science content knowledge
- To enhance the participants’ abilities to teach science effectively
These Institutes are specifically designed for elementary school teachers who do not have strong science backgrounds.
Incentives to Participate
Graduate credit through UW-Green Bay will be available. Participants can earn five graduate credits free of charge (a value of over $2000) for engaging in the two week summer Institute along with the subsequent academic year follow-up activities of designing (or re-designing) a science unit based on what they learned during the Institute, implementing it with students, and evaluating its effectiveness.
In addition:
- $500 of science supplies used during the Institute will be yours to keep
- Mileage reimbursements are available.
- Lodging will be provided free of charge to participants who travel an hour or more to get to UW-Green Bay.
- Lunch is provided each day of the Institute, free of charge.
