| Federal Work Study |
|
Federal Work Study is a federally funded, need based program, which gives students an opportunity for part-time
employment, on or off campus. Federal Work Study allows students to earn money to supplement their education, while
gaining meaningful work experience. Students must complete a Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to find
out if they qualify.
Students will be notified of an award, and can view this on the Student
Information System (SIS). Students may earn
the entire dollar amount of their award, but not more than the award. (Exceptions must be discussed with the
supervisor). Students can determine the number of hours they may work by using the following formula:
Work Study Award/Hourly wage = Total number of hours
Total hours/Number of Earning Weeks = Number of hours per week
Federal Work Study recipients are not assigned jobs. Students must apply to and be hired for jobs that are posted in
PRO. Students are instructed to complete a "Profile" on their initial visit to the PRO system. If you previously
created a profile, you must update it. You must Answer "Yes" to the questions, "Employer
Can See Resume?" in the
Additional Information area, and "Are You Currently Seeking a Job
On-campus while Attending UW-Green Bay?" in the
Miscellaneous Information area. This will allow your resume (Word) to be compiled with others in a Resume Book in PRO which potential employers can see. Make sure to indicate in the "Objective" section of your resume that you are
interested in obtaining a job on-campus, and that you have Work Study, if this applies.
You may follow these links for additional help with creating
a resume (Word), and making your resume
available on-line (Word) to prospective employers via PRO.
You may be offered more than one job. Please contact the Student Employment Coordinator (wendtb@uwgb.edu) if you
obtain more than one job.
If a student has a job with a non-profit organization previous to being awarded Work Study, please contact the
Student Employment Coordinator (wendtb@uwgb.edu). You may, in most cases, use your Work Study award for the job
you currently hold.
Money earned from a Work Study position is not applied to tuition or related costs. Wages are paid to students
bi-weekly by direct deposit or payroll check.
Work-Study Jobs off campus are classified as "Community Service", "America Reads", or "America Counts". "Community
Service" refers to jobs that work directly with disadvantaged community members to include youth, families or the
elderly. These jobs promote valuable hands-on experience, while benefiting the community. These opportunities are
posted in PRO under "Community Service Work Study".
Some examples of Community Service Employers are:
- NEW Curative Rehabilitation Center
- Boy's and Girls Club
- YMCA/YWCA
- Marion House
- NEW Community Shelter
- Salvation Army
- Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary
- Department of Natural Resources
America Reads/America Counts utilizes Work-Study students as reading and/or math tutors for elementary grades. This
is a great opportunity for education majors, as well as others. The schools involved in this program are delighted
to have UW-Green Bay students working with them. These opportunities are posted in PRO under "America Reads/Counts
Work Study". Students can also contact the Student Employment Coordinator for the names of schools participating in
this program.
WORK STUDY CANCELLATION
When a student has been offered a Fall/Spring Federal Work-Study Award, and has not obtained a job 30 days after
the fall semester has begun, that award will be cancelled. You must contact the Student Employment office if you
have employment with a later start date, or if you have a job that will not start until Spring semester.
Standards of Academic Progress must be met to continue eligibility for Work Study.
