Excellence in Teaching
Associate Professor, Humanistic Studies
The ability to engage students is often the top criteria for those nominated for teaching awards. Clif Ganyard is said to do that and more. His peers say he is able to deliver material with clarity and creativity while challenging students with demanding requirements and sophisticated material. Another plus is his willingness to explore his students’ interests — often making them assume ownership of class time, yet ensuring that the critical material and key points are also addressed. His interdisciplinary approach is to skillfully weave history, music, philosophy and other disciplines into each class, and he often starts his classes with music to set the mood and the starting point of a discussion.
Ganyard is considered one of the most tech-savvy members of the faculty, making extensive use of D2L, blogging and Wikis in his courses. His areas of specialization include modern European, German and Japanese history and culture, Western civilization and European intellectual history.
