About  Leadership Development

The Office of Residence Life will work collaboratively to foster student involvement and leadership development in University housing by creating involvement opportunities, assisting with recruitment and marketing, providing training and development for current and emerging leaders, advising formal organizations, and by providing recognition and support.

Leadership Development Model

The Five Practices of Effective Leaders (Kouzes & Posner, 2003)

1. Model the Way Find your voice by clarifying your  
    personal values
2. Inspire a Shared Vision
3. Challenge the Process
4. Enable Others to Act
5. Encourage the Heart

Kouzes and Posner’s research found that when leaders engage in the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, more frequently they:

a. Are more effective at meeting job related demands
b. Create higher performance teams
c. Foster loyalty and commitment
d. Increase motivation levels and willingness to work hard
e. Promote higher levels of involvement in their
    organizations
f.  Possess high degrees of personal credibility
g. People are more satisfied with the leader’s actions 
    and strategies.
h. Followers feel more committed, energized, influential
    and powerful.
