— Frequently asked questions
Residence Life - community center
When will I get my room assignment letter?

Room assignments will be mailed by mid to late July. You will receive your roommate's name, address, and telephone number. We recommend contacting your roommate(s), so that you may decide what items you will bring to campus.

When can I move in?

You will receive a move-in date with your roommate letter. This letter will state the day you can move in. This year's move-in dates are:

TBA

What can I bring - what should I leave behind?

Visit our What to Bring and Leave page.

What size are the beds in the residence halls and apartments?

Extra long sheets fit the beds in the residence halls and apartments best (36" X 79").

Can I bring a car if I'm a freshman?

All students are allowed to keep a vehicle on campus, however a parking permit must be purchased. Students living in Apartments 3312-3334 who want to park in the apartment lot must be of sophomore status and obtain a housing logo from the Office of Residence Life.

Where do I purchase a parking pass and how much will it cost?

You can purchase a parking decal at the Bursar's office, located in the Student Services building. For information regarding cost, please see the Public Safety website. The Parking Office will not ticket cars parked properly in the parking lots during the first week of classes, so don't worry about not having a decal on the first day.

How big are the closets in the Residence Hall Rooms?

Closets are approximately 45 1/2 inches wide and 24 inches deep from the back wall to the inner door. It is 64 1/4 inches from the floor to the bottom of the clothes rod and another 2 1/2 inches to the bottom of the shelf. The shelf is 12 inches deep and it is located 24 1/4 inches from the ceiling. Their is a triangular shelf support in the middle of the shelf (underneath it) that would be in the way of anything in the middle up to ten inches below the shelf. Visit our FACILITIES section to view floor plans.

I am not living in the residence halls. Can I still buy a meal plan?

Yes. For more information visit our DINING section.

What is provided with each room or apartment?

Every residence hall room and apartment bedroom is carpeted and is furnished with two dressers, desks, desk chairs and beds. The desks are equipped with a lamp and bookshelf. The apartments come with a full kitchenette. Each apartment also has two chairs, a loveseat, two end tables and a coffee table in the living room. You are welcome to bring more furniture if you would like.

How do I gain access to my residence hall?

All residence halls and apartment buildings are accessed via either Passport (student ID) card or combination lock. The Resident Assistant will give you your room combination when you check in. For safety and security reasons, sharing your lock combination with others is strictly prohibited.

How and where will I do my laundry?

Clothes washers and dryers are located in your hall and charge $1 per load. Laundry (and vending) machines are accessed via money you deposit on your Passport (student ID) card.

What about phone service?

Most students bring cell phones to campus.  One landline is available per building for students who wish to make local long distance calls using a calling card.

What about television service and Internet access?

Television service and Internet access are provided. Students who bring a television and a computer must provide their own CAT-5E or CAT-6 TV hook-up cable, and a RG-6 computer hook-up cable that has F-style thread-on type connectors. Learn more by visiting our ResNet (Internet) and Cable TV pages.

Is recycling required?

Recycling is mandatory in Wisconsin. University housing facilities have designated recycling areas located near them. Three types of exterior recycling dumpsters are available - one for trash, one for paper/cardboard, and one for aluminum/plastic/tin/glass. Residents are expected to read recycling instructions provided and dispose of recyclables accordingly. For health and safety reasons, all trash and recycling containers must be cleaned before reuse.
