What if the position I'm interested in is not currently available?
If you are interested in a Classified
Civil Service position for which we are not currently recruiting,
you may apply to become part of a pool of qualified candidates.
Applicants for Classified Civil Service employment in the State
of Wisconsin are required to take an examination for each Civil
Service classification that they are interested in. Exams and vacant
positions are posted in the State
Service Wisc.Jobs Bulletin. The
exams create pools of qualified candidates that are used by all
State of Wisconsin government agencies, including the University
of Wisconsin System.
How Do I apply?
Many of the employment opportunities on campus are Civil Service postions which require the completion of a competitive application or examination process in order to be eligible for consideration for an interview. Although the application process varies depending on the position, most jobs in state service require an application and an examination to measure your qualifications. Depending on the type of job, the exam may be a written multiple choice or essay test, a rating of training and experience, an oral exam, or some combination of these types of exams. There is no need to submit your application for state employment prior to taking the exam, but you should bring the application with you to the exam center. You may take more than one exam, but you must complete all tests in the four hours that the test center is open.
How can I identify the locations where I wish to work?
Vacancies can occur throughout Wisconsin or only in certain locations. Each job announcement lists the areas where vacancies are anticipated. You will only be considered for jobs in the location where you state you will work (Question #15 on the application). Do not check an area unless you are sure you would accept a job there.
The position that I am applying for requires me to take an exam at a Monthly Examination Center. How do I find out where to go?
Exams are held on the second Saturday of each month at over 14 locations statewide. The test center in the Green Bay area is located at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Building 6, 2740 West Mason Street. You may park in Lot "A." This is a walk-in exam and does not require any pre-registration. Be sure to report to the test location listed in the job announcement on the date and time listed. There is no pre-registration or fee required to take a Civil Service examination. All examinations to be administered and the locations of the exam centers are listed on the WISCJOBS website under "Monthly Exam Centers."
How can I study for the examination and what should I bring with me?
The Office of State Employment Relations (OSER) has a study guide available on their website. When you report to the exam center, be sure to know the Job Announcement Code (this is available on the WISCJOBS website). Bring photo identification, a completed State Job Application (also available on OSER’s website) and two sharpened #2 pencils.
What happens after I take an exam?
You should expect your notice of examination results to be mailed to you in approximately four to six weeks from the date of your exam. If you pass the exam with a score of 70 or above, or a status of "eligible," your name will be placed on the employment register for that job title. When there is a vacancy for that position, the hiring agency will contact you directly to advise you of your eligibility for that position. Generally, applicants who score the highest may be interviewed or receive further consideration. Your exam score remains valid for six months from your test date.
What happens if I cannot be at the test center on the designated day?
Make-up exams are available at 5pm on the Monday following the Saturday exam in Green Bay. You will need to register to take the make-up exam. To register, call (608) 266-3637 no later than 10am on the Monday following the Saturday exam date. The recorded message will give you the specific instructions on attending a make-up exam.
I am disabled or need special accommodations to take the exam. Who do I contact?
To take the exam, notify the test coordinator at (608) 266-1731 or TTY Call Relay 711. Notification must occur at least eight days prior to the exam.
Who do I contact for more information?
Call the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Human Resources Office at (920) 465-2390 if you have questions or need more information.
