Essential Job Functions:

The Area Coordinator position assists in carrying out the mission and philosophy of the Office of Residence Life. The Office of Residence Life provides housing for 2,200 students during the academic year and 3,000 guests during the summer. Each Area Coordinator is responsible for overseeing a community of approximately 400 residents. With the help of Resident Assistants, the Area Coordinators strive to develop and maintain a safe, enjoyable, supportive and inclusive living environment where residents can achieve academic success and personal growth and development. The Area Coordinator is a member of the Residence Life team and holds administrative responsibilities, participates in committees and meetings, and serves students in a multitude of ways. The Area Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director.

This position will include the following responsibilities:

  • Serve on a team of 5 Area Coordinators, supervising a team of 63 Resident Assistants, assigned to 27 residential facilities on campus.
  • Assist in recruiting Area Coordinators.
  • Assist in hiring, training and evaluating Resident Assistant staff.
  • Ensure a high quality of student life on campus through delivery of community development activities, education programs, and leadership involvement opportunities for residents.
  • Rotate on-duty 365 days per year to respond to roommate disputes, incidents of student misconduct, student crises, and emergencies.
  • Ensure a residential community conducive to sleeping, academic study, responsibility, accountability, personal development, and safety.
  • Advise individual students, student leadership groups, student conference delegations, and peer conduct review boards.
  • Coordinate administrative activities and services with the Business Operations and Facilities Management areas of Residence Life.
  • Assist with summer camp and conference operations and services.
  • Serve on appropriate committees as requested.
  • Assume other duties assigned by the Director and Associate/Assistant Directors.
Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree at time of application
  • One year of graduate-level or full-time professional housing employment experience
  • Knowledge in student development, theory, issues and trends
  • Experience in student staff supervision, student advising, community development, educational programming, and student leadership development
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, administrative and organizational abilities, and computer proficiency
  • A positive attitude, strong interpersonal skills, ability to work with diverse individuals and willingness to be part of a collaborative team
  • Ability to use departmental keys, access cards, procurement cards, university vehicles, and confidential information appropriately

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Higher Education Administration or a related field
Starting Date: July 1, 2013
Conditions of Appointment:

Position is a full-time academic staff appointment.  Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Special Conditions of Appointment: This position requires on-campus residency and compliance with on-campus rules and regulations. Requires a varying schedule and workload over 40 hours per week including on-duty responsibilities (on a rotating basis) during the evenings, weekends and holidays. Occasional training, meetings and programmatic responsibilities on weekends, especially at crucial times of the year should be expected. This position includes occasional travel required for student development, leadership development, and professional responsibilities and development.
Salary:

Salary of $32,500; the UW System provides an excellent benefits package including participation in the Wisconsin State retirement plan. (Total Compensation Estimator).
