Orientation

Because we appreciate the talents of all of our faculty and staff, it's important that you learn about the University and understand how your work will contribute to our mission. Attending one of our New Faculty and Staff Orientation Program provides not only an introduction to how the University works but gives you an opportunity to meet other new faculty and staff from across campus.

Orientation begins with a free breakfast or lunch and is followed by individual programs for faculty and staff. Highlights of the programs include a campus tour, opportunities for involvement, UWGB history and traditions, and roles and responsibilities for staff members. Orientation takes place the week before classes begin for faculty and instructional staff and throughout the year for staff.

Getting started with a new job as Faculty or Staff is not always easy. As new employee's must become comfortable with their new surroundings, In order to ease the transition bi-yearly orientation sessions are also held for new faculty and staff. We encourage an atmosphere where faculty and staff can feel personally and professionally challenged and share our institutional vision and values.

Purpose of Orientation

Orientation is a continuum of activities that occur during the first six months of a new staff member's employment. These activities include New Faculty and Staff Orientation, personal benefits orientation, and mentoring, all with the goal of helping people acclimate to a new professional and perhaps personal environment, to "settle in."

Staff orientation plans are tailored to meet the unique orientation needs of new staff members, and most importantly provide supervisors and new staff with check points on orientation progress. This is an interactive plan, with the supervisor, new staff member, COMRADES, and the University all playing a vital role in its fulfillment. This is how it works:

  • Supervisors download the Staff Orientation Plan, complete the employee information, and develop the plan by checking the action items requiring attention before the member's arrival on campus.
  • Supervisors and new staff members meet the first day of employment to go over the orientation plan and get started.
  • Supervisors and staff members meet periodically to review progress, in particular, during the first week, first month, and third or fourth month of employment.
  • New staff members note the date as action items are completed under the "Completed" column.
  • Supervisors and staff members sign off on the orientation plan by the end of the fourth month of employment and forward to the Human Resources Office.
