Position Information

Title: Associate Researcher
 

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to an Associate Professor in Natural and Applied Sciences and is responsible for assisting with the design and implementation of an indoor yellow perch rearing facility that will serve as the baseline nutrient source for locally grown produce. This appointment is for approximately one year with the potential for extension based upon the existence of funding.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Research and design a fully functional hatchery that meets the long-term production goals of The Farmory.
  • Work with project partners to develop standard operating procedures for acquiring yellow perch egg ribbons and rearing eggs through the juvenile/young adult stage.
  • Align operations to ensure a high level of productivity, and develop a management protocol that complies with bio-secure and safety requirements.
  • Develop educational opportunities that will engage the public, as well as undergraduate and graduate research students interested in developing projects involving the hatchery and its components.
  • Interact heavily and draw on expertise from project collaborators located at The Farmory and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee School of Freshwater Sciences.
  • Provide strong outreach for this project, and disseminate results widely in local publications and peer-reviewed journals.
  • Play a secondary role in numerous ongoing studies associated with the Aquatics Ecology and Fisheries Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Earned PhD in aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries ecology, or related field at the time of application


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge and extensive experience in fish early life history, fish husbandry, and fish health. This working knowledge should be coupled with experience in hatchery design and all of its various components, including the spatial optimization of tanks, water management, feeding operations, and water quality monitoring
  • Strong quantitative skills and statistical experience, which includes knowledge of SAS and R programming and experience designing and analyzing data
  • Strong publication record
  • Evidence of successful grantsmanship
  • Experience in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students with research projects
  • Interest and proven ability to teach science courses at the undergraduate level
  • Broad interests in aquatic ecology/aquaculture and further interests in the opportunity to blend this knowledge with sustainable agriculture

Conditions of Appointment

Position is a full-time Academic Staff appointment for approximately one year with the potential for extension based upon the existence of funding. Official transcripts of the highest degree achieved will be required of finalist(s). A criminal conviction investigation will be conducted on the finalist(s). Salary

Minimum salary of $41,892.

This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
