Position Information

Working Title:  HVAC Specialist Advanced
UW System Title:  HVAC/Refrigeration Specialist - Advanced

Essential Job Functions

This position reports to the Building and Grounds Superintendent and is responsible for the maintenance and updating of the campus EMS system, campus HVAC controls system including both pneumatic and digital controls, scheduling of HVAC equipment, maintenance of all campus HVAC system steam traps, maintenance of Laboratory Sciences fume control hoods and other necessary HVAC equipment and systems.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Operate energy management system.
  • Maintain scheduling of all building functions, occupied and unoccupied programming.
  • Operate all keyboard control functions, edits, and program changes.
  • Add points and set up screens.
  • Maintain proper operation of heating and cooling distribution systems.
  • Maintain ductwork, steam traps, heat exchangers, piping, repair leaks, and maintain insulation.
  • Check and balance air volumes.
  • Insure correct operation of controls.
  • Check, calibrate, repair or replace thermostats, valves, air motors, and pneumatic and electrical control devices.
  • Operate and maintain digital and pneumatic controls and variable speed drives.
  • Work with contractors; including coordination, follow-up and assuring quality of work performed.
  • Review operating and preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Establish and perform maintenance per manufacturer's recommendation.
  • Determine job priority.
  • Use TMA work order system, including documentation of work performed.
  • Insure proper operation of all AHU's, fans, pumps, and valves.
  • Inspect, clean, lubricate, and repair or replace belts, bearings, shafts, impellers, and drive motors.
  • Respond, investigate, and resolve trouble calls and too hot/too cold complaints.
  • Maintain adequate parts inventory, materials lists, and part numbers for valves, pumps, seals, filters, and all required supplies.
  • Establish contacts with vendors and use purchasing contracts.
  • Layout and install new ductwork, dampers, grills, coils, and controls.



  • Associates Degree at time of application
  • 3 years of experience with troubleshooting refrigeration/air conditioning related problems and heating problems
  • Physical abilities to climb ladders and perform sustained overhead work with hands
  • Physical abilities to lift 30 pounds from the floor to overhead occasionally


  • 5 years of HVAC repair and maintenance experience

The successful candidate will have exceptional oral, written, interpersonal, organizational, time-management, computer, proofreading, and customer service skills; the ability to communicate with diverse constituents; and the willingness to work independently, as well as part of a collaborative team. This position requires the ability to manage multiple deadlines, projects, and priorities with attention to detail and exceptional accuracy; show excellent judgment, including sensitivity to personal and confidential information; and demonstrate flexibility and the ability to adapt to ongoing change. Good work habits, such as attendance, punctuality, accountability, thoroughness, and resourcefulness, are essential for this position.

Conditions of Appointment

Position is a full-time University Staff appointment.  The work hours for this position will be 6:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.  A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work screen examination will be conducted on the finalist(s).  A six-month probationary period is required for this position. Hourly salary of $23.03
This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
