Working Title:  HVAC Specialist
UW System Title:  HVAC/Refrigeration Specialist

Essential Job Functions

Under the general supervision of the Building and Grounds Superintendent, the primary responsibilities of this position include the performance of HVAC preventative maintenance and repair work. This includes inspecting, maintaining, repairing, performing preventative maintenance, and assisting with minor installations of HVAC projects. This position will also maintain the campus energy power generators, above ground fuel storage tanks, and vacuum pumps.

This position includes the following responsibilities:

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance per manufacturer's recommendations and facilities TMA maintenance checklist for HVAC equipment.
  • Insure proper operation of all cabinet heaters, exhaust fans and related controls.
  • Inspect, clean, change filters, and change belts for HVAC equipment.
  • Calibrate and check thermostats and controls for HVAC equipment.
  • Assit with maintenance and repairs of all mechanical components and controls for HVAC.
  • Replace/repair bearings, shfts, motors, fans and pumps.
  • Perform electrical tests such as voltage readings and amp draws of all HVAC equipment.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance per manufacturer's recommendations and facilities TMA maintenance checklist for emergency power generators.
  • Complete minor repairs to the emergency power generators as needed and advise the Buildings and Grounds Superintendent of any further repairs necessary.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance per manufacturer's recommendations and facilities TMA maintenance checklist for above groun storage tanks.
  • Document, fill out and turn in the proper paperwork to comply with state regulations regarding above round storage tanks.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance per manufacturer's recommendations and facilities TMA maintenance checklist for emergency vacuum pumps.



  • 2 years of experience with troubleshooting refrigeration/air conditioning related problems and heating problems
  • Physical abilities to climb ladders and perform sustained overhead work with hands
  • Physical abilities to lift 30 pounds from the floor to overhead occasionally


  • Associates Degree at time of application
  • 5 years of HVAC repair and maintenance experience

Conditions of Appointment

Position is a full-time university staff appointment. The schedule for this position will be 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A six month probationary period is required.

A criminal conviction investigation and pre-work physical will be conducted on the finalist(s). Hourly salary of $16.55 - $18.00, depending on qualifications and experience. This position is not exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
