Site Rotation Descriptions for Dietetics Internship

Note: Each site is coded as a medical nutrition therapy [MNT], food service [FDS], or community nutrition/nutrition education [COMM] site. Each facility used for a Dietetic Internship rotation is listed with the town in which the facility is located. Some rotations (particularly the community ones) may require travel outside of Green Bay.
Medical Nutrition Therapy Rotation at St. Vincent hospital, Green Bay, Bellin Hospital Green Bay, St. Mary’s Hospital, Green Bay, Thedacare, Appleton & Neenah, St. Elizabeth Hospital, Appleton, Aurora, Green Bay, Appleton and Oshkosh, and Fresenius, Appleton [MNT]: (13 weeks) The primary purpose of the medicine/surgery/cardiac/renal rotation is to provide the intern with the knowledge and skills needed to provide Medical Nutrition Therapy (nutrition care and education) to patients in surgery and cardiac services while working directly with a clinical dietitian in a general medicine and surgery unit.
Specialty Rotation at St. Vincent's Hospital Green Bay, Bellin
Hospital Green Bay, St. Mary's Hospital Green Bay, Thedacare Appleton and
Neenah, and St. Elizabeth Hospital Appleton
[MNT]: (1 week)
The primary purpose of this specialty rotation is to
introduce the intern to a variety of specialty clinical nutrition practice
areas. While in this rotation the intern will shadow the clinical RD in each
practice area, study the effect of complex medical conditions on nutrition
status and become familiar with the variety of resources and materials needed to
practice within a nutrition specialty. There will be fewer opportunities for the
intern to provide direct independent nutrition care in these rotations since the
time spent with each RD will be limited.
Community/Hospital Rotation - Door County Memorial Hospital, Sturgeon Bay, Aurora Oshkosh and Mercy Medical Center, Oshkosh [MNT]: (2 weeks) the primary purpose of this rotation is to provide the intern the opportunity to work directly with dietitians in a small community hospital. The intern will perform the screening, assessment, monitoring and education of hospitalized patients as well as assist with community based nutrition education programs.
Nursing Home or Sub acute unit in Green Bay, Appleton and surrounding areas [MNT]: (2 weeks) This two week rotation in nursing homes or sub acute unit to provide the intern with the opportunity to learn the importance of: 1) the provision of quality food service and nutrition care in long-term health care facilities; 2) the multi-disciplinary team in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of resident nutrition care; and 3) the management functions and responsibilities of the RD in a long term health care facility.
WIC Rotation at North Eastern Wisconsin (NEW) Community Clinic in Green Bay, Oconto County WIC, Oneida Community Health Clinic, Oneida, Winnebago County WIC, Oshkosh/Neenah or Outagamie County, Appleton [COMM]: (3 weeks) During this rotation, the intern will assist the RD and nutrition educators in providing services and education to women, infant and children (WIC). The intern also will be able to gain an understanding of the management responsibilities of the RD.
Brown/Outagamie/Oconto County University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension [COMM]: (2-4 weeks) The University of Wisconsin Cooperative Extension Services is responsible for the implementation of the classroom nutrition as well as community based nutrition programs.

Si Se Puede, Green Bay [COMM]: (2 weeks) the interns work independently under the direction of a nurse practitioner in a community grant based diabetes program within St. Willebrord church. The interns will be assigned a variety of projects from development of website materials, newsletter articles, and educational materials. They will attend classes, possibly teach classes and go on home visits. The intern will observe how cultural influences impact nutrition risk and provision of services.
Wellness rotation at YMCA: Heart of the Valley/Appleton, Greater Green Bay YMCA, Green Bay, Gold’s Gym Green Bay and Appleton, Bay Natural Foods, Green Bay or Bellin Sports Health, Green Bay [COMM]: (2 weeks) the purpose of this rotation is to introduce the role of the intern in the wellness setting. The intern will observe and participate in teaching of classes, community outreach projects and counseling.

School Food service Rotation at Ashwaubenon, Green Bay School Districts, Appleton School Districts and St. Norbert College [FS]: (4 weeks) the purpose of this rotation is to introduce the intern to the role of the RD in school food service. The intern will observe school programs at elementary, middle, high school and college, noting similarities and differences in food acceptance, menus and eating behaviors among the age groups and schools. They will also write a week's menu, conduct a food waste study, review current nutrition guidelines for schools and assist with the planning of nutrition education in-services for teachers (to be used in classroom curriculum).
Hospital Food service Rotation at St. Vincent's Hospital, Green Bay, St. Paul Elder Service, Inc., Kaukauna, Bellin Hospital Green Bay, and Thedacare, Appleton/Neenah [FS]: (4 weeks) this rotation will provide the intern with experiences in the operation and management of the food service subsystems of procurement, production, delivery and service. Activities related to quality improvement and system analysis are important parts of this rotation.
Entrepreneur/Business [OPEN]: (1 week) During this rotation interns will be able to observe and participate in the following kinds of experiences: home health care, pharmaceutical sales, consultant, endocrine center, management of a women's health service or complete an additional week rotation at a previous site where they have high interest or desire to work.

Professional Development: (1 week) the interns will attend the Wisconsin Dietetic Association (WDA) annual meeting and the local dietetic association meetings and prepare for the RD exam.
Project management and ongoing projects: The interns will work individually and in groups to complete community and/or MNT projects. Each will function as project manager during one project which will include planning and implementation. Examples of these projects may include: presenting community cooking classes, preceptor training, MNT case study presentations, Open House, spring conference and graduation.
