Major Emphases

General Human Biology Requirements  and the list of General Emphasis Electives

This emphasis is appropriate for students seeking careers in managerial, sales, or other types of positions in biological or health-related industries, laboratory research positions in biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries, or because of general interest in human biology.

This emphasis prepares students for professional programs in the health sciences, such as medicine, dentistry, or optometry, and graduate programs in biological or medical science.

Exercise Science Requirements (scroll down) and the list of Exercise Science Electives

This emphasis offers students broad training in anatomy and physiology with a focus on biomechanics, nutrition and/or psychology. It is appropriate for those students who wish to pursue careers as a personal trainer, in sports medicine, physical therapy, or occupational therapy, or continue onto graduate programs in exercise physiology or kinesiology.

Nutritional Sciences/Dietetics (scroll down) provides a focus on the biological and physical principles of nutrition. The Nutritional Science/Dietetics emphasis is accredited as a Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education (CADE) of the American Dietetic Association (ADA), 120 South Riverside Plaza, Suite 2000, Chicago, IL  60606-6995. Students who successfully complete this program (see the Student Handbook) may apply for entry into a dietetic internship program, which is required to become a registered dietitian (R.D.).  Other employment opportunities for graduates (that do not require an R.D.) include education, the food industry, food service management systems, community agencies, and health care organizations.

Cytotechnology (scroll down) is the microscopic study of human cells primarily for the detection of pre-cancerous conditions or cancer. This area of emphasis is offered in affiliation with three schools of Cytotechnology:  Mayo School of Cytotechnology, Rochester, MN; Marshfield Clinic, Marshfield, WI; and the UW-Madison School of Cytotechnology. 

Students interested in this emphasis complete 92 credits at UW-Green Bay, including all general education requirements, after which they take an 11-month 32-credit clinical internship at one of the affiliated schools. Upon completion of the internship the student graduates with a degree in Human Biology and is eligible to take the certification exam. As an alternative, a student can complete a degree in Human Biology, including appropriate upper level electives, and be eligible for post-graduate programs across the country.
