Program Goals
The Human Biology program relates very strongly to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Guiding Principles of the development of practical career skills and the acquisition of a knowledge base. To this end, the program goals are as follows:
- Understand the fundamentals of human biology.
- Have an evolutionary perspective of the human organism.
- Know the biological and behavioral adaptations of the human organism.
- Know the principles of scientific experimentation, observation, quantification, data analysis, and reproducibility.
- Have knowledge and understanding at an advanced level in genetics, physiology, anatomy, exercise science, nutrition, and/or developmental, cellular, and molecular systems.
- Understand current laboratory techniques and the use of equipment relevant to human biology and/or dietetics laboratories.
- Ability to perform laboratory experimentation and investigation at an advanced level.
- Ability to organize, evaluate and analyze current scientific knowledge.
- Ability to conduct properly controlled experiments using biological systems.
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing and orally the knowledge and skills of human biology.
- Understand the basic technical and social implications of scientific knowledge and methodology as they relate to human biology.
- Know and be able to distinguish between
ethical, religious, and scientific questions.
Nutritional Sciences/Dietetics Emphasis Program Goals
The Nutritional Sciences/Dietetics emphasis stresses the specific role that food and nutrition has in maintaining and improving health, including human nutritional requirements throughout the life span, the utilization of nutrients in health and disease, the role of nutrition in disease prevention and treatment, and the factors that affect the quality, quantity, and availability of food. Its intent as an emphasis within the major of Human Biology is to promote the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of biological sciences, food, and nutrition. The specific mission of the Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD) is:
"To provide undergraduate interdisciplinary courses in the major of Human Biology that not only focus on the biological, physiological, and behavioral aspects of the human organism, but also examine the specific role that food and nutrition have in maintaining and improving health."
The DPD at UW-Green Bay is designed to provide an opportunity for graduates to pursue careers as dietetic professionals with employment opportunities in education, the food industry, food service systems, community programs, government agencies and health care organizations. Students are also advised regarding the options and requirements of attending graduate school.
The program goals and outcome measures of the DPD at UW-Green Bay are as follows:
- To prepare graduates to successfully meet the requirements for acceptance into dietetic internship programs.
- To prepare graduates who complete a supervised dietetic internship program to pass the National Registration Examination for Dietitians.
- To prepare graduates to be employed in education, food industry and business, food service systems, community agencies, government agencies and health care organizations (hospitals, clinics, and nursing homes).
- To prepare students for successful acceptance into graduate programs of Dietetics, Nutrition, or related fields.
- To prepare graduates to be self-directed learners who develop personal and professional goals and seek continuing education for skill building and self development.
- To prepare graduates who are actively engaged in their communities through activities of volunteerism and citizenship.
