Ethics

Dress Code

Teaching Assistants should dress tastefully and discuss expectations with the professor prior to the start of the semester.

Ethical Dilemmas

  1. What should you do if you have a conflict with the professor? Communicate any issues you may have to the professor first. If issues persist, seek advice from the department chair.

  2.  What should you do if you suspect a student of cheating? It is important to notify the professor if you suspect a student of cheating, as cheating is not tolerated in any class. Although you may be certain of the student’s actions, is best for the professor to handle the situation.

  3. What should you do if a student shares confidential information with you? If a student shares any information with you pertaining to class, it is your ethical responsibility to communicate the issue to the professor, as the authority of a Teaching Assistant is limited. Depending on the situation, if a student contacts you regarding a non-class related issue use your best judgment or advise him/her to seek further help.

  4. What should you do if a student is harassing you? No matter what type of harassment, the professor should be notified so the proper steps can be taken to resolve the issue.

  5. Teaching Assistants are expected to behave professionally and, therefore, must avoid any conflicts of interest with students that may lead to dishonesty, cheating, and/or favoritism. Make a conscious effort to get to know your students, while maintaining proper boundaries.
