Ethics
Dress Code
Teaching Assistants should dress tastefully and discuss expectations with the professor prior to the start of the semester.
Ethical Dilemmas
- What should you do if you have a conflict with the professor? Communicate any issues you may have to the professor first. If issues persist, seek advice from the department chair.
- What should you do if you suspect a student of cheating? It is important to notify the professor if you suspect a student of cheating, as cheating is not tolerated in any class. Although you may be certain of the student’s actions, is best for the professor to handle the situation.
- What should you do if a student shares confidential information with you? If a student shares any information with you pertaining to class, it is your ethical responsibility to communicate the issue to the professor, as the authority of a Teaching Assistant is limited. Depending on the situation, if a student contacts you regarding a non-class related issue use your best judgment or advise him/her to seek further help.
- What should you do if a student is harassing you? No matter what type of harassment, the professor should be notified so the proper steps can be taken to resolve the issue.
- Teaching Assistants are expected to behave professionally and, therefore, must avoid any conflicts of interest with students that may lead to dishonesty, cheating, and/or favoritism. Make a conscious effort to get to know your students, while maintaining proper boundaries.
