Disposition and Responsibilities

Disposition

  • Teaching Assistants should be attentive, observant, helpful, and well-mannered.
  • Teaching Assistants should treat the professor and all students professionally.

Responsibilities

  • Readings: Teaching Assistants are required to read and understand course material and any outside readings the professor assigns.
  • Meetings: At the beginning of the semester, all Teaching Assistants meet with their respective professors to set up a weekly meeting time to discuss course objectives.
  • Assignments: Professors assign a variety of coursework to Teaching Assistants, some of which include producing projects, leading discussions, giving a lecture, facilitating an exam review session, writing papers, developing exam items and in-class exercises, and journaling. Some professors may also require a portfolio or teaching philosophy.
  • Classes: Attend all class sessions, be on-time, professional, and accessible to the students and the professor (assisting during class when needed); serve as a student-professor liaison.
  • Grading: No grading of tests, quizzes, or papers is involved. Some professors may use Teaching Assistants for grading in-class participation assignments or entering grades.
