A. Purpose
The purpose of the faculty sabbatical program is to enable
recipients to be engaged in intensive study in order to become
more effective teachers and scholars and to enhance their
service to the University. (Excerpted from the UW-System
Academic Planning Statement)
B. Eligibility
1.
Faculty members who have, or will have, completed six or more years
of full-time instructional service (or its equivalent) in the
UW-System, prior to the start of the sabbatical period, and have
not taken a sabbatical within the UW-System during the previous
six years of full-time service are eligible to apply for a
sabbatical.
2.
Leaves of absence, regardless of the source
of funding (including personal resources), will be excluded in
determining a faculty member's years of full-time service.
3. Preference
shall be given to those making significant contributions to
teaching and who have not had a leave of absence, regardless of
source of funding, in the previous four years.
4. A
sabbatical will be awarded to a faculty member only if he/she
agrees to return to UW-Green Bay for at least one year of
service after the termination of the sabbatical.
C. Types
1. A faculty member may take a sabbatical leave for an
academic year and receive, from UW-Green Bay, a maximum of
sixty-five percent of his/her full compensation for that
period. This includes compensation from all
institutional sources.
2. A faculty member may take a sabbatical leave for one
semester of the academic year and receive, from UW-Green Bay, a
maximum of his/her full compensation for that period. This
includes compensation from all institutional sources.
D.
Process
1. Eligible faculty members should prepare a sabbatical
proposal according to the guidelines in Section F.
2. Ten copies of the proposal and completed supporting
materials must be submitted to Timothy Sewall, Associate Provost for
Academic Affairs by the deadline announced in these
guidelines.
3. The Instructional Development Council will provide
recommendations to the Academic Deans based on the evaluation
criteria described in Section E.
4. The Deans will bring recommendations for sabbatical leave
to the Provost, who, after consulting with the Chancellor, will
make recommendations to the Board of Regents by October 15 of
each academic year.
E. Evaluation Criteria
1.
The applicant has not had a leave of absence, regardless of the
source of funding, for the previous four years.
2. The applicant has made significant contributions to
teaching at UW-Green Bay, as documented within their proposal
and curriculum vitae.
3. The applicant’s proposed activities relate specifically
to one or more of the following areas of emphasis:
·
Support of UW-Green Bay’s Select Mission
·
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
·
Interdisciplinary Activities
·
Collaboration Program Activities
·
International Education
·
Application of Technology to Instruction and/or Distance
Education
4.
The applicant’s narrative clearly describes how the work
undertaken during the sabbatical period could benefit
teaching, student learning, and scholarship/creative work.
5. The applicant’s proposal is well-organized, clearly
written and contains a well-defined scope of work.
F. Guidelines for Preparing a Proposal
NOTE:
Applicants for one-semester sabbaticals are encouraged to choose
the spring rather than the fall semester and are reminded that
the funding of these proposals is contingent on the ability to cover the curriculum. Sabbaticals
must be taken during the term for which they are awarded and for
the length of time proposed. An academic year at 65% pay cannot
be changed to a semester at full pay.
1. The sabbatical proposal must:
a.
Abstract. Include an
abstract of your proposal on a separate page that is
a maximum of 75 words in length and specifically
identifies the area(s) of emphasis,
listed in section E.3. above,
addressed in
the proposal.
b.
Period of Proposed Sabbatical and Timeline.
Specify when the proposed sabbatical would be taken (specific
semester or academic year) and a
timeline for your proposed sabbatical activities (one half to
one page).
c.
Past Contributions.
Discuss how your teaching and scholarly contributions while at
UW-Green Bay have provided a foundation for your proposed sabbatical
activities (about one page).
d.
Projected Activities and Expected Outcomes.
Describe, as fully and specifically as possible, all the
projected activities of the sabbatical leave, their expected
outcomes (e.g., preparation of teaching materials,
publications), and how the activities will enhance BOTH your
teaching and scholarship capabilities (maximum of five pages).
e.
Supplementary Grants. Describe any supplementary grants (with amounts) you have
applied for or intend to apply for during the period of
sabbatical leave (maximum of 2 pages).
2. The proposal must be accompanied by a letter from your
budgetary unit chairperson that specifically addresses:
a.
How you have contributed to the support of your unit (teaching
and service), including an
evaluation of the quality of your contributions.
b.
The potential benefits of the proposed sabbatical activities to
the unit.
3. The
proposal must be accompanied by a letter from the Secretary of
the Faculty and Academic Staff certifying your eligibility for a sabbatical
leave.
4. The
proposal must be accompanied by a current curriculum vitae
specifically detailing all teaching assignments and
teaching-related activities (and all reassignments from teaching
that were counted towards your full-time load), scholarly work,
institutional service, and community service for the 2005-2006
and 2006-2007 academic years and the Fall 2007 semester.
5.
If the proposal entails attending special institute programs,
access to restricted services, facilities, museums, collections,
etc., or consulting or working with other professionals, attach
copies of relevant letters, documents, brochures, pamphlets,
etc. describing the particular study-site and/or granting
permission. One copy of such supplementary attachments is
required.
6. TEN COPIES
of the proposal and all supporting material (with the
exception of the SOFAS letter, which is sent directly to the Associate Provost) must be submitted to
Timothy Sewall, Associate
Provost for Academic Affairs, CL 835, no later than April 11,
2008. Incomplete proposals will be returned to the
applicant.
