Tax Information

All international students must complete Wisconsin State Tax forms regardless of employment status. You must fill out and file Form 8843 by April 15th of each year.

International Students must also complete and file Federal U.S Tax forms. If you have been employed for any part of the tax year you must complete either the 1040NR or 1040NREZ Federal tax forms. Your employer will send you a W-2 form in January indicating how much money you were paid and what was withheld in taxes. You will need the W-2 to complete your tax forms. Please make sure your employer sends your W-2 forms to your local address, not your permanent address overseas.

Tax Treaties

Some countries have a tax treaty with the United States making some or all employment earning tax exempt. A list of tax treaties is available online here. Note, tax forms must be filed regardless if a tax treaty exists.

Scholarships

If you have an athletic scholarship or another monetary scholarship that is not a tuition remission based, the scholarship is considered taxable. You will receive a form 1042-S from UW-Green Bay listing your scholarship amounts. You will need this document to report your scholarship income when completing your form 1040NR or 1040NREZ.
