Antigua, Guatemala - language immersion
Antigua , Guatemala is a small, cobble-stoned Spanish Colonial city. Impressive ruins of churches, palaces and other buildings make it the only city of its kind in Central America. The Proyecto Linguistico Francisco Marroquin is the oldest and most prestigious of the Spanish Language Schools in Antigua. Earn 4 credits while spending 5 weeks studying in Antigua.
The Proyecto Linguistico Francisco Marroquin is the oldest and most prestigious of the Spanish Language Schools in
Antigua and is the only school that also teaches Mayan languages. One of the hallmarks of the quality of the PLFM is that it is certified to administer a Foreign Service style examination to measure fluency levels. PLFM, a non-profit Guatemalan foundation, was founded in 1972 by linguists and indigenous Guatemalans and serves two causes: the preservation of Mayan language and culture; and the teaching of Spanish.
Students will enroll for a 4-credit Spanish Study Abroad Course at UW-Green Bay. While in Antigua, all students will spend approximately 7 hours each day (Monday-Friday) one-on-one with a certified Spanish as a second language teacher (native of Guatemala). A placement exam will be given on the first Monday of classes. All classes (from absolute beginners to advanced) are conducted completely in Spanish.
Students will be placed with a local host family in Antigua. The home stay accommodations allow students to continue practicing their language skills outside of the classroom while immersing themselves in the culture. The families are all in walking distance from the language school. All families are carefully chosen by PLFM in collaboration with UW-Green Bay.
