Merida, Mexico

Merída is known as the "White City" for its bright facades, its clean streets, and its spotless regional costume. Merída is the capital of the peninsula and was founded almost 450 years ago when it emerged on a Mayan Ceremonial Center. It is one of the oldest cities in Mexico and claimed by many to be one of the most beautiful cities in all of the World. "Delicious cuisine, exuberant wildlife, long beaches, outstanding Mayan cities, colonial monuments and wonderful hospitality are just a few of the benefits of this region" Located only a short distance from other attractions in Mexico such as Progresso, Cozumal, and Cancun, Merída is rich in cultural and history. Students studying in Merída will be immersed in the Spanish language and culture.
Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan
The Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan (UADY) was founded in 1922 and prides itself on its strong history. Today, within the 15 academic departments, the university offers 20 distinct professional programs and 42 post-graduate programs. Accommodations
Exchange students studying in Merída for one or two semesters will be placed with a local host family. The home stay arrangements are coordinated through the International Office at UADY. Meals are provided by the host family and are included in the housing costs. This gives students another opportunity to practice their language skills while learning a bit of local culture.
Application Process
All interested students should pick up an application form from the Office of International Education (Rose Hall 310). In order to be eligible for this program, all
students must:
- Have at least sophomore standing by the beginning of the program
- Have completed at least five semesters of college Spanish or have an equivalent
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75
- Demonstrate personal maturity and flexibility
Program Dates
This program is offered for the fall semester, spring semester or the entire academic year.
- Fall Semester: Mid-August-Mid-December
- Spring Semester: Early January-Mid-July
- Academic Year: Mid-August-Mid-May
The Merida Exchange Program
Students studying at UADY through UW-Green Bay's exchange program will gain
independence by traveling to Merída and spending a semester or year abroad. All students must enroll in an intensive Spanish language course after arriving in Merída prior to the beginning of other classes. All courses taught at the University are in Spanish. For the remainder of the semester, there are a wide variety of class choices for students including Mexican/Mayan history, culture and literature. This program is especially designed for those students who are both very mature and independent.
