Thursday Keynote - "A Family Re-Union: Culturally Responsive Engagement"
It is clear that "business as usual notions" are ineffective for "all" children and youth. Rather than merely focusing on the challenges of closing the achievement gap, the opportunity exists to focus on building learning communities that fortify what learners receive during the instructional process so that the achievement gap can systemically be eradicated. This also creates an opportunity to engage families as equitable partners in the strategic process toward this end. Family involvement processes, in traditional terms, are insufficient. Family "engagement" must be the goal in the field of education, if the desire is to make "all" finally mean "all" in socially just and equitable schools.
The Thursday evening keynote will share culturally responsive and research-supported strategies to engage families as true partners in the education of their children.
Friday Workshop - "Building Community: A Journey of Purposeful Family Engagement"
There is a great need to develop a sense of self-efficacy and a consciousness of building meaningful community in the field of education. Families, as equitable partners in the process, are an important link that is often ignored or silenced. This workshop will engage participation in a culturally responsive model for strategic steps to effectively engage family members in the education of their children. Participants will leave the session with practical applications to assist in immediately designing purposeful family engagement in K-12 classrooms, schools, and districts. Case studies from specific proven projects from Wisconsin, New York, and Texas will support the morning's journey.
