Closing the Achievement Gap through Literacy Leadership” was the Institute for Learning Partnership’s 2009 Fall Conference topic.

The 11th annual Fall Conference was held Thursday evening and
Friday, October 8-9, 2009.
  

Ellin Oliver Keene Ellin Oliver Keene, a national literacy expert and former classroom teacher, staff developer, adjunct faculty, author and co-author, led the Thursday evening presentation and Friday workshop for educators.

The evening presentation, "Literacy Comprehension and the Development of the Intellect," demonstrated ways in which ordinary literacy experiences can be transformed into intellectually rich lessons for all students. This topic applies to both educational leaders and classroom teachers in the quest for closing the achievement gap.

Friday's workshop, "Critical Questions in Literacy Leadership," addressed a range of issues concerning the role of leadership in developing literacy skills for instruction. Participants were invited to consider a range of questions concerning their role in developing instructional skills in literacy for both classroom teachers as well as administrators.

The Friday workshop also included a variety of literacy topics and breakout sessions and a demonstration by Keene with local children to illustrate the effectiveness of the strategies presented during the morning presentation
