New Cofrin Library Catalog Now Available!
By Marlys Brunsting

The Cofrin Library switched to a new automated Library system on January 10, 2000. It significantly changes the look of the online catalog and all the staff functions (circulation, reserves, cataloging, serials processing and acquisitions). The online catalog, which is web-based, has more functionality and an easy-to-use interface.

Some of the features available with the new system include:

  • check which books you have borrowed and when they’re due or if fine amounts are owed.
  • place a recall on Library items (a request for an item that is checked-out to someone else).
  • search our catalog and other University of Wisconsin Library catalogs either independently or simultaneously.
  • print, download or e-mail results of catalog searches
  • connect directly to web sites that are associated with items in our collection

You can connect to the catalog via the Library’s revised web site at http://www.uwgb.edu/Library/ and click on Cofrin Library Catalog.

Please give it a try and tell us what you think! A feedback button is located on the introductory screen.

State of the Library Report
By Kathy Pletcher, Library Director

At the beginning of the 21st Century the state of the Cofrin Library is very good.

Our collections continue to grow at a modest rate. At the end of 1999 we had 280,000 books; 350,000 government documents; 1,200 print periodical subscriptions; 2,600 electronic journal subscriptions; 57,000 maps; and 7,500 linear feet in archives collections.

For the first time in 10 years the UW received an increase in State funding for libraries. Governor Thompson and the Legislature included $7.3 million in new funding for the UW Libraries. Some of the money will be held centrally to purchase statewide licenses for electronic resources and to support a statewide delivery system for sharing books and other materials among the 26 campuses. The majority of funds have been allocated to the campuses to build local collections. UW-Green Bay Library will receive $50,000 in 1999 and an additional $50,000 in 2000. While this does not restore all the lost purchasing power over the past decade it is a significant increase and will greatly improve our ability to update our collections with new knowledge.

During 1999 we completed a major self-study of our Federal Depository Program. After reviewing our self-study the Chief of Depository Services at the U.S, Government Printing Office concluded that the Cofrin Library is a "solid depository, with an excellent collection development program and strong reference service, [that our ] cataloging efforts greatly improved access [to the collections] and [we offer] excellent outreach to the community." The favorable review of our self-study means that we will not need to undergo an inspection by the Superintendent’s Office.

A recent milestone for the Cofrin Library is the replacement of the KeyNOTIS Library System which has served as the online catalog for the past seven years. The new Voyager Library System was installed in August 1999. The test database was accepted in early December and by January 10, 2000 all systems were up and running. The new Library system includes a web-based catalog, simultaneous searching across the UW Library catalogs, integrated full text resources and hyperlinks to Internet resources.

Other milestones of 1999 include:

  • physically integrating InterLibrary Loan with the Circulation Department
  • providing 4000 hours of access to more than 150,000 visitors
  • responding to 10,000 research requests
  • teaching Library research methods to 3,500 students
  • improving web services through better design and more content
  • cataloging federal documents and Area Research Center materials
  • adding a general access computer lab,
  • installing a new computer printing system; and
  • adding a color photocopier.

As we enter the 21st century, the Library staff joins me in renewing our commitment to equality of access to materials and resources, service, literacy, learning, and intellectual freedom.

Friends Present Library with Annual Gift
By Paula Ganyard

The Friends of the Cofrin Library each year presents an annual gift to the Library. In the past the gifts have included:

  • 1997: A multi-volume reference work, The Columbia Gazetteer of the World ($500)
  • 1998: Two compact discs in a projected 20 volume set of all of Bach’s contatas ($100). Preservation project for historic photographs in the Special Collections Department ($900).

The gift for 1999 was two music-listening stations, three portable headphones and music compact discs ($1000). Kathy Pletcher accepted the gift on behalf of the Library from the Friends President Barbara McClure-Lukens at the Friends Annual Meeting held on December 10, 1999.

The stereo equipment, with headphones, is described as a much-needed upgrade to benefit music students and others who access the Cofrin’s collection. The music-listening stations include AM/FM digital synthesizer tuner; three-CD changer; dual-cassette deck; and turntable. Available for use by any Library patron, the equipment can be found on the third floor of the Library.

The annual gift of the Friends of the Cofrin Library is made possible by the organization’s fundraising activities each year. If you would like to know more about the annual gift or would like to make a donation please contact any of the Board Members.

Books & Baskets are Back!
 By Deb Anderson

Plans are well underway for the spring 2000 Books and Baskets fundraiser. Organizers are hoping to build on the success of the debut raffle in 1999 which raised several thousand dollars for the Friends.

Raffle prizes consist of theme baskets containing a book plus an array of goods and services donated by area businesses. Year 2000 themes are: A Night Out, Pamper Yourself, Children (Babies and Toddlers), Cook’s Night Off, Home and Lawn Improvement, and Home Office.

Project coordinator Deb Anderson encourages all Friends to contribute their support. If you can donate goods or services for these baskets or can provide references to someone who can, please call Deb at (920) 465-2539. Also, if you can help sell tickets, call merchants for donations, or pick up donated items, please call. And, don’t forget to buy raffle tickets! Watch for raffle tickets to be on sale starting March 20. It’s for a good cause!

Friends Goals 2000

  1. Increase support from outsiders (community, campus administration, and campus community.)
  2. Improve communication (with members and nonmembers.)
  3. Keep members active and interested in participating.
