Books and Baskets Returning for its Fifth Year

Preparations are already taking place for this year's Books and Baskets raffle, our primary fundraiser. Last year with the help of members who pitched in to help sell tickets we raised over $6000. This enabled us to give a substantial gift to the Cofrin Library to further staff development and toward the purchase of some much needed furniture.

Basket themes this year are

  • Entertainment
  • Feast of Food (cooking and restaurants)
  • Made in Wisconsin
  • Pamper Yourself
  • Seasons and Celebrations
  • Student Survival

We are especially excited about our new basket, Seasons and Celebrations, which already has over $1000 of seasonal items including four snow tires! We could use your help to fill this basket and others. If you can donate goods or services, or if you can refer us to someone who can, please call coordinator Deb Anderson at (920) 465-2539. The items you donate need not be elaborate and expensive. For example, the Entertainment basket could use board games, video rental certificates or movie passes. Computer disks, microwave popcorn, phone cards or a DVD player would be perfect for Student Survival. We have committments for flowers for a year and a $500 gift certificate for UWGB textbooks. Use your imagination.

The Weidner Center has again offered us a great opportunity by inviting the Friends to sell Books and Baskets raffle tickets in the lobby before and during intermission at eight performances of the hit show Burn the Floor, March 18-23. Volunteer ticket sellers are needed in order to take full advantage of this generous offer. We need two volunteers for each evening (Mar. 18-23) and for the matinees (Mar. 22, 23). It's a lot of fun and the baskets -which will be on display with all their goodies- really sell themselves. If you can help, call (920) 465-2539.

We will also be selling tickets at the University's very successful Heirloom Plant Sale and at East Town Mall. Pick a place, give us a call. Let's top last year!

From the President, Chuck Matter

I am very happy to be able to share wonderful news with you. Due to the work of you and other Friends of the Cofrin, the Friends has been able to support the Library at a level we would not have imagined at the birth of the organization.

At the Annual Meeting in December, the decision was announced that the Friends would contribute $8000 to the Cofrin Library and the professional development of its librarians. The gift will be used to provide $2500 for professional development of the Library staff. Another portion of the allocation, $2200, was used to purchase a magazine rack and nine chairs for public seating, and $300 was used to buy subscriptions for the magazines to fill the rack. The final $3000 was set aside for the purchase of technical equipment in the future.

The funds that allowed such a substantial gift were obtained in large measure from the basket raffle and the efforts of many individuals who brought it to life. Without your work, the project would not have been such a remarkable success.

I should mention that you will have another opportunity to participate again since the kick off for the 2003 basket raffle will occur in a few weeks.

Thank you very much for your membership in and support of the Friends of the Cofrin Library.

Introducing new officers

In December we welcomed two new people to the offices of Secretary and Treasurer.Well, relatively new.

Pam Younk will be our new secretary. Pam has previously served on the Development and Membership committees and has been one of our directors since 2002. Shehas been in nursing since 1972, when she graduated as a Diploma RN from Columbia Hospital School of Nursing in Milwaukee. She graduated from UW-Green Bay in 1987 with a BSN and from UW-Oshkosh in 1993 with a MSN. Pam is currently employed as an adjunct faculty member in the Nursing Studies Division at Marian College of Fond du Lac. She also works as a Nurse Clinician at Sanger B Powers Correctional Center in Oneida. Her hobbies include reading romance novels, mysteries, and dreaming about horses.

Our new treasurer is a familiar face around the university, Michael W. Murphy. Mike is an Emeritus Professor of Humanistic Studies at UW-Green Bay and has been a member of the faculty since the founding of the institution. He retired in 2001 after 36 years of teaching English and Humanities courses and serving in a variety of administrative positions, including Chair of English, Chair of Humanistic Studies, Director of Academic Support, Associate Dean, and Interim Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

We are fortunate to have them serve as officers. Next issue, three new Board members!

Library News :
State of the Library Report for 2002 by Leanne Hansen, Director, Cofrin Library

Just as world activity around us ebbed and flowed during 2002, so too did Cofrin Library activities. We said goodbye to some valued staff friends and welcomed new ones. We completed some large projects and began others. All in all, this past year was another successful one for us.

Highlights included:

  • Universal Borrowing: Begun in January, this new service enables patron-initiated requests for materials from other UW System libraries.
  • Outreach:
    1. A usage survey was conducted in April.
    2. The fourth floor area was made more comfortable and attractive for student's casual use.
    3. Some artwork was added.
    4. Some new computer chairs were purchased.
    5. Bulletin board spots on the concourse were obtained for use by the Library and Friends.
  • Library remodeling plan: Plans for Library remodeling were developed and submitted to campus administration.
  • Procedural changes: Staff developed new, more efficient ways of doing daily tasks to make best use of time and dollars.
  • The Belgian American digital collection, a joint project with UW System and the digital center at UW Madison, went public in November. Collections in the Area Research Center were also represented in another new public digital collection, The Pioneer Experience, produced by the same partners.
  • The Northeast Wisconsin Economic Archives, which began with the Fort Howard archives donation, proceeded and will continue to evolve.
  • Cofrin Library partnership with the 3-year teaching history grant awarded to Professor Andrew Kersten.
  • Library staff members were actively involved in and/or recently elected to professional Library organization positions.
  • New services being developed for release second semester are: an online tutorial (Searchpath) for teaching Library use and information literacy; electronic guides called Guides on the Go; AskWisconsin, the virtual reference desk for reference assistance using online chat rooms; and ILLiad software for interLibrary loan and electronic document delivery.

But our largest efforts went into staffing positions as we experienced some turnovers due to positive events in the lives of former staff members.

We said goodbye to:

  • Judy Nelson, Head of Library Processing: retired after 30+ years here
  • John Jax, Head of Access Services: took a different position at UW-La Crosse
  • Paula Ganyard, Instruction/Reference/Library Web Master: became campus web master

Some staff members assumed new positions:

  • Deb Strelka, Head of Library Processing
  • Julie Fricke, halftime Cataloger (already halftime Reference)
  • Emily Castrop, Circulation Librarian

And we welcomed new staff friends:

  • Nancy Anderson, halftime cataloging assistant
  • Jean Wentz, returned as halftime Special Collections assistant
  • Ray Bates, Circulation Evening/Weekend Supervisor
  • Karen Eckberg, Web Resources, Instruction, & Reference Librarian

The Friends have been a large part of our successful year through the donation of funds for professional development as well as through programming and moral support. A number of our staff members were funded to attend pertinent conferences and workshops that they would have missed without your generous gift. We genuinely appreciate the difference you make in the service we can provide and are very appreciative of your continued support.

Staff Reports

This past fall professional development funding from the Friends allowed two staff people to attend out-of-state activities. One recipient was Jeanette Skwor who is responsible for serials processing. She attended a regional users group meeting organized in early October at which users of our Voyager automated Library system share expertise. The other recipient was Julie Fricke, who is new to cataloging although not new to staff. Julie attended a special cataloging conference in September.

From Jeanette Skwor:

The Keynote Address at the Great Lakes Users Group Meeting was on the revolutionary changes in our society brought about by the advances in digital technology over the past thirty years, and how those changes not only impact libraries currently, but the outlook for Library services and collections in the future.

The workshops I attended were all serials-focused and helpful in several ways to what I do. One of the workshops was on the use of macros. This is something I have used in a limited capacity; I gained more ideas for usage along with tips for implementing. I returned with copies of handouts from several workshops, as requested by others in the Library. All in all, this conference was a valuable and much appreciated experience.

Thank you.
Jeanette Skwor

From Julie Fricke:

Thank you very much for your generous support of the Cofrin Library and its staff. The professional development funds I received allowed me to attend the Online Audiovisual Catalogers (OLAC) conference in St. Paul, MN. The conference was very timely for the Library Processing Department and me personally, as I am new to cataloging. This conference gave me the opportunity to attend several workshops. I also had the opportunity to network with other, more seasoned cataloging librarians from all over the U.S. and Canada, and got to hear some very impressive speakers who have worked in the cataloging field for many, many years.

Two of the four workshops I attended were most beneficial. One, presented by Jay Weitz, from OLAC was about cataloging video recordings. He discussed the trials and tribulations that have arisen since the introduction of DVD recordings. In addition to covering the cataloging of DVDs, Weitz also addressed Streaming Video (video available over the Internet). Streaming Video is viewed as the "wave of the future". Overall, the conference was very rewarding to me, and I learned a lot. I hope that is reflected in what you find in the Library's catalog.

Again, I thank you for your support.
Julie Fricke

New Services

Searchpath

Searchpath is a new resource for UW--Green Bay students, a self-instructional tutorial to teach them basic Library and research skills. It covers the research process from initial topic selection to citation styles and the issue of plagiarism. Each of the six sections takes about 10-15 and includes a short quiz.

Searchpath is not a substitute for Library instruction, rather we hope that instructors will have students complete the tutorial before Library instruction so that less time can be spent teaching research mechanics and more time can be spent teaching critical thinking. We also hope that distance education students who do not have the advantage of attending a formal Library instruction session will use Searchpath.

AskWisconsin Librarians

The Cofrin Library reference staff will be taking part in a new virtual reference service called AskWisconsin Librarians during the Spring 2003 semester. The service, provided by a consortium of libraries in Wisconsin, will be used to better serve the Cofrin Library's local patrons, as well as Library users throughout the state. AskWisconsin has a real time chat function so that patrons can chat one-on-one on the Internet with a librarian. For those patrons who would rather not chat, there is an e-mail function that can be used instead.

For more information about Searchpath and AskWisconsin Librarians, please contact the Reference Department at 920-465-2303.

ILLiad for InterLibrary Loan

The Cofrin Library will offer an enhanced interLibrary loan service called ILLiad at the start of the spring semester. (See News & Information for press release.) ILLiad differs from the previous system used by the Cofrin Library in the following ways:

  • users are authenticated before gaining access to the system
  • requests are placed online
  • patrons can view requests and track the status of requests
  • articles delivered electronically to our Library can be sent to users electronically
  • patrons are notified by e-mail when requests arrive
  • renewals are requested through the system
  • cancelled requests or historical requests can be easily resubmitted
  • citations found using FirstSearch databases can be requested through ILLiad

ILLiad offers benefits to staff also:

  • one software package replaces three
  • overdue notices are generated automatically
  • copyright compliance is built into the system
  • interfaces smoothly with our current online catalog

ILLiad will be used by all UW campus libraries beginning in the spring semester of 2003. For more information on this new service please contact the InterLibrary Loan Department at 920-465-2385.
